I wonder Sheriff Joe for President with his fiscal resposibility I think the IRS would be gone as well as all the pork programs I bet this country would run well under him.
Sheriff Joe is a scumbag who abuses prisoners under the color of authority. Period. He's no bleeping folk hero. There's nothing admirable about a man who mistreats and humiliates people under his care.
In his county, if you get locked up for offenses as minor as inability to pay a traffic ticket or being intoxicated in public, that's considered license to treat you like a piece of dirt. For example, he spends less money per prisoner for food than he does for his Department's dogs, which means people eat green baloney and molded bread.
He houses prisoners in cloth tents that aren't even open to allow the circulation of air, in a desert region where daytime temperatures reach over 120 degrees. It's a miracle no one has keeled over dead from heatstroke. Actually I'm guessing they have, and the deaths are covered up with official bs.
These aren't rapists and murderers he's doing this too; those are kept in medium or high security prisons with air conditioning, running water and decent food. As I said, it's people who are guilty of minor offenses.
And you know what? The crime rate isn't a damn bit better there than it is anywhere else in Arizona, no matter what people say.
Do you really admire this man, Mike? You shouldn't. Imagine how he'd be treating Ash right now, if he had his hands on him.
Troy I beg to differ he is being fiscally responsible and remember the prisoners are criminals and are there for punishment not to stay in a holiday in, the claims regarding molded food have proven to be lies but yes he makes the non violent ones live in a tent city and they all wear pink. I am for Joe for President

I know people who have been in those tents, Shaun. And I doubt you do. They're the ones who told me about green baloney and moldy bread; please don't tell me their "claims have proven to be lies."
There's a clause in the Constitution about "cruel and unusual punishment," and I'd say what he does to people qualifies on both counts.
From an online article on him:
These harsh conditions have the added benefit of making the prisons very cost effective for the taxpayers. “Tent City” is constructed out of basically free Korean War tents on a cheap piece of land by the county landfill and the chain gangs perform services to the community, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars a year. He serves the prisoners two meals a day, the cost of feeding each prisoner being 14 cents a day (Lincoln 1). Arpaio boasts, “It costs more to feed our police dog. It costs US$1.15 a day to feed the dogs…I’m very proud of that” (qtd. in “The toughest sheriff in the universe” 1). With all these cost cutting measures, it would seem that saving the taxpayers’ money would be a reason for Sheriff Joe’s resounding popularity. This assumption would be faulty, however. For every amenity that he cuts from the prisons, he buys some unnecessary and expensive piece of equipment, gets the county involved in lawsuits due to his cruel prison management, or pays for an extravagant publicity stunt. In his second term of office alone, he bought a howitzer with $15,000 tires, a $70,000 armored car, spent $3 million to move to a penthouse office with big-screen TVs and other luxuries, and spent more than a million dollars on take-home vehicles for his favorite staffers. In 2001, some $16 million had already been paid to plaintiffs in successful lawsuits against the Sheriff’s Department (Nelson). The deductible on the department’s insurance against lawsuits has been raised to $5 million after a wrongful death case in 1997 in which Scott Norberg died of asphyxiation in a restraint chair after being physically subdued (“Top Ten Reasons to Recall Joe”). Tax payers are not benefiting from Joe Arpaio’s policies.
Please explain to me how someone can feed prisoners a healthy diet on 14 cents per person per day, when it costs $1.15 a day to feed the dogs? And why he bought a howitzer with the money he saved?
He's a sadistic, grandstanding publicity hound. I think he should be locked in his own tents for a year or two, not touted for president.
I don't know about the howitzer but I am for punishing criminals that only need the basics, they do not need workout facilities or TV's they are in Jail being punished.
The guy has been on the job for a long time. If he were truly as bad as indicated he surely would have had enough rope to hang himself.
My brother in law spent time in the tents before going to state (not in the sports sense) he never held a grudge. Uncomfortable, yes, kinda what he expected out of jail.
I think it's a good thing he is enforcing illegal immigration laws in Maricopa Co.

Welcome to political reality in Arizona, jerry. The Indians, Mexicans and poor Whites at the bottom of the heap who get kicked around by Sheriff Joe don't usually vote. The white Republicans from back east who retired to Arizona and can afford to pay their traffic tickets, and who get drunk on the golf course instead of in "public," do vote.
Yes Sir,
I lived in Tucson for 7 years. I'm not talented in the tongue & quill catagory to compete on political witt. So, I'll just respect everyones individual opinions and press on.
I wish Sheriff Joe would run for President just so I could have someone I could vote for that I would know in my heart could get the job done and get America up and running like a real country again!
This is a newer story about a sheriff in Az. An article about him went
around the email circuit last year. My sister Janice lives in Arizona and they just love their sheriff Joe.
It is true, he does all these things.
Hmmm, makes me wish everyone had this kind of sheriff, wouldn't that be
great!
Subject: SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN
Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray
animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the
department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners.
They feed and care for the strays; every animal in his care is taken out and
walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal
nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like
to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street,
given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.
>> >
Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two
years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and
even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
>> >
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but
most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most
of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the
prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at
the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge
farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they
grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work
and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which
provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where
prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for
the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the
Prison.
Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural that has a special hotline phone number painted
on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40
deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up
his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the!
border; He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA
ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY: Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the 'Tent
City Jail': He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the
inmates for them.
>> >
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their
weights; Cut off all but 'G' movies.
>> >
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
>> >
Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.
>> >
He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order
that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again, But
Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel. When asked why
the weather channel, He Replied, 'So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be
While They A re Working ON My Chain Gangs.'
He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
>> >
When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This isn't the
Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
>> >
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he
replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the
inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More On The Arizona Sheriff: With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press

Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip
Down To Their Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago
started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is
not one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In
Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full
Battle Gear, But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Damned Mouths!'
>> >
Way to go, Sheriff!
>> >
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime
and/or repeat offenders.
>> >
Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back into live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, just delete it.
Why do we need more like him? Because he amuses you? His shenanigans haven't changed the recidivism rate a bit compared to the rest of Arizona, so it isn't like mistreating those people is doing society any kind of good. And what he saves them in baloney sandwiches, he costs them in legal fees and outrageious expenditures for items unnecessary to the job at hand.
I don't hold with mistreating prisoners any more than I believe in abusing or neglecting a dog, a cat, or a pen full of chickens. In spite of what PETA and law-and-order conservatives seem to believe, a man is one of God's creatures, and God's creatures are entitled to decent food, water and shelter from the sun.
And again, let me emphasize that he isn't doing this to rapists and murderers; they're locked up indoors in prisons. He's doing it to minimum security people: those who couldn't afford to pay a traffic ticket, or got caught driving with expired tags, or got into a fistfight outside a bar somewhere. Being convicted of petty offenses doesn't somehow turn them into depraved, subhuman monsters who deserve to be tortured.
He's a county sheriff with no jurisdiction over the prisons and I know he can't do the tent's or the work detail with those serious criminals but if you aren't aware even those spend 23 hours a day in their cells without TV. It's not that he ammusses me it is that he has been effective and if you recall I was in Law Enforcement and I do believe what he is doing does benefit society

I don't think you can equate baking people in the desert and feeding them an unhealthy diet to depriving them of television.
How is he effective? By everything I've read, he hasn't lowered the crime rate a bit compared to the rest of Arizona. So how does his mistreatment of petty offenders "benefit society"?
troy it reduces residivism show me one person who wants to go back into one of the sheriff's jails. that reduces crime and the only reason Phoenix hasn't seen a drop is that he is now handling the criminal deportations of mexicans which will be shown in his numbers. The feds have checked out his diets and they passed all the requirements set forth by federal mandates. These criminals don't need anything special and three meals a day of bolonge sandwiches is perfectly fine for them if they want produce they grow it.

The recidivism rate didn't drop in the thirteen years or so before he started handling the deportations...
