I've often wondered if not being allowed to carry would put the company at fault in the case of an incident. I know that my dad's company (machine shop repairing heavy equipment) was sued and had to pay because an employee dropped a large piece of steel on his foot. He was wearing sneakers at the time. Everyone in the company was made aware at time of hire and at annual training that steel toed shoes were highly recommended, however the nature of the work is such that they are not considered an OSHA requirement. Just a really, really good idea. His suit stated that the company should have forced him to wear them (he was fishing for them to pay for the boots). Using that logic, it seems to me that to avoid liability in the case of a shooting incident, the company not only should allow ccw, but require it.

To me that sounds like more of the nanny state to the rescue via pimp slapping your employer.

You fellas have looked at all sides of the issue in a very productive manner. If I was still working, I would still be carrying, because of the areas where I had to go. I would rather be fired and alive, than simply dead. There are boltdown car safes out on the market that can be installed easily, and are fast entry if needed. I don't think a company can force you to open one of those. The police can't force the issue without probable cause or a warrant, so I think that would be a safe alternative. And it's safer for your firearm, as they have been proven to be very difficult to open. Remember, in most states you can carry a loaded firearm locked in the glove compartment, and the police would need a warrant to get inside. Other than that, this has been a very informative, and enjoyable thread.

If the State of Tennessee trusts me, why wouldn't AT&T at least allow me to keep my pistol in the trunk? I'm not going to carry at work anyway. I hop in the company truck and am gone by 0730 anyway. A disgruntled employee could come in and kill 50 people with no fight what so ever. Since the company doesn't have any armed guards to protect us, would they be liable if the place got shot up and people died?

I think it goes a little deeper than no having a gun on their property. AT&t employes thousands of people and of thoes there is a large number of gun owners. Knowing what has happened in the post office because of some pissed off employee they are trying to lesson the likely hood of multiple shootings. AT&T has just as many self serving jerks there as the post office has. I would have the gun in my car, just don't tell anyone you have it. I don't think they have random trunk or glove compartment checks, Don't ask - Don't tell.
