Surplus ammo is cheap but i want something better.
I have plenty of cheap surplus Bulgarian ammo, i can shoot all day if i want, as long as i'm willing to clean my rifle all night long too. But i'd like to have a bit of good, clean, non-corrosive high quality ammo on hand as well. Do you guys have any recommendations? I don't really care if it's expensive. I can (grin and bear it, boy, be brave now...) forego beer and cigars for a couple of days, no big deal. Like i said, i can use the Bulgarian ammo for plinking. But for serious target work i wan't something clean, and a bit more accurrate. Is commercial match ammo available anywhere?
the stuff i shot was made by Prvi Partizan. It says non corrosive but it is made in Eastern Europe. It is like 11 or 12 bucks for a box of 20. that is the cheapest ive found
I feel the same way about corrosive ammo (although I have a tendancy to clean my weapons after shooting) so I reload.
I use Wolf Gold, Igman, Winchester, and Sellier & Bellot for the starter brass. The great thing about reloading is that I can tailor the ammunition to the individual rifle (ogive length) and make it very consistant, clean, and relatively cheap (usually about $0.37 per round). I also have a much better choice of bullet types and weight than off-the-shelf ammo.
It WILL save you money for sure. Also, it's a whole other facet of the sport! Plus, it gives you something to do on days you can't shoot for whatever reason.

We're on the mosin-nagant forum so i naturally assumed everyone knew i was asking about 7.62X54R. One should never assume anything.
No you're right. I don't always look for where I'm at, what forum. I find them 3 different ways. The home page, the forum page and through what I've left replies on already. So sometimes I don't pay attention, while other times I forget to look.
Plus it is true, some will post in one area asking for a broad range. Like this for instance. I could have looked and saw it was under Mosins, but you could have been looking for ammo for more then one caliber? So no biggie. As long as you get the answers and find what you need, that's what counts.

I've had great luck with silver bear ammo, 8bucks for 20rds, the ones i use for hunting are soft point, i replaced my winchester soft points, cuz they were 21.99/20rds....and were only 165gr rounds. the silver bear soft points are 203gr, non-corrosive, zinc/nickel plated steel cases:
Always wondered what'd happen if I dismantled a 7.62x54r round and packed it in black powder, and tried shooting it......got steps 1 and 2 done, just afraid to fire it
Black powder is less volatile than smokeless powder.
THIS IS SUPER-DANGEROUS WRONG!!!
Let me quote from a reloading manual I have to describe why:
Quote:
While smokeless powder generates higher pressures than does blackpowder, these pressures are only generated when the smokeless charge is tightly contained in such a manner that the pressure can build. Pour a small quantity of smokeless powder in a heap on the ground and ignite it, and you will see that it burns robustly but not explosively. Do the same with blackpowder and it seems to burn even more robustly. This occurs because blackpowder will burn more progressively at lower pressures than does smokeless powder. This means that blackpowder becomes explosive when less tightly-contained than smokeless powder. In the authors' opinion, blackpowder is far more susceptible to accidental explosion from casual use than is smokeless powder. Many experienced reloaders tend to think of smokeless powder as a propellant, while considering blackpowder a true explosive!

Reason: Changing names to protect the "innocent"
Hey guys. I didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea just because i was misinformed.
So i deleted those posts about black powder. I would appreciate it if you guys would do the same. I admit i was wrong. Please pay attention to what Just A Car said. I apologize to all board members.
Hey Ball- No worries! People here will always cut you slack. The reason that these boards are such a terrific asset is because there are so many talented members. Everyone has something to share, including you. As there are so many new people here, you must be careful of what you post. JAC was relaying what HE had read on the subject, nothing more! You may want to clarify your posts, or say that "you read somewhere else that..." Did the replies to your post help you? I bet they did. Other than that, nothing else matters. Welcome to G&G!

And it's great therapy.
I second everything Geo M44 just said. None of my Mosins have had corrosive ammo in them since I bought them. I reload for all my calibers.

I understand you were just relaying what you read and I don't fault you for that, BB. If I came across as aggressive or offensive, it wasn't intended as such. I saw what could have been taken by an uninformed reader as something that could get them hurt or killed and thought it necessary to make it blatantly clear that there was danger in that information.
I hope you don't mind and understand that I'd like to keep that up as just good information, but I will go back and edit it to remove your name from the quote. Funny thing is, though, the post you deleted made it apparent that you weren't saying it, you were just relaying what you read... now it appears that I'm just quoting something you said. Without me editing, you actually made it look worse for yourself... so, I'm off to do some editing.

I just didn't want anyone to get hurt by being careless or cavalier with black powder. It's cool, it's over and done with. Let's get on with it and have some fun!
