Star Model Super 9mm Largo

Well… I just bought my second Star Model Super 9mm Largo last night off gunbroker.com … I probably paid too much for it, but I wanted one that was a 100% to match my other one and I have been looking for a long time now… This one has been up for sale quite a while and hasn’t sold… probably because the grips are discolored; but I can order some for it…. I have this double holster that fits the small of my back that is pretty cool… I am gone to order a 1000 rds for the two pistols next week and then look out!

Noel,
I have one as well, they are outstandingly made. Mine has the phenolic grips, someone had sanded the checkering off and buffed the grips to a shine. Mine shoots nice tight groups. Can you please post a pic when you receive the pistol?

Congrats! These are great guns. I modded mine to use .38 super ammo as the Largo round is a bit hard to find. FWIW, you can also shoot 9mm Steyr in them and Hornady has a pretty good loading for it. We have a member here at G&G who also makes custom ammo for them, here's his website:
Home Page Reed's Ammunition & Research Home of the .22 Reed Express
BTW, here's mine, I wish I still had it but I traded it for a PA-63

I've seen two Stars lately, both at Tex-Guns.com, if you want some more. They feel good and I hear they are accurate, built like a tank.

I found my Star at a friends house, it was in a bucket in his garage with a 45 auto. My Star is like brand new, nice shiny seep blueing. I had a hard time finding 9MM Largo ammo that wasn't corrosive but I found some on The Amory web site. Great pistol.

Thumbs up

Noel, if you need a nice set of grips for the Star, shoot a PM to Toolman. He makes some FINE grips! I have an early example of his Star grips - they fit flawlessly and look superb!
Haven't modded my Modelo Super for the .38 Super yet - so many projects, so little time!

Thanks Big Dog... But I think I might try to restore the ones on it... Will see.

Yea, I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a Norenco 45 Auto on top which was rusty and I picked it up and lo and behold this Star was there. I gave him $300 for the pair. I knew the Norenco was a chinese made but didn't know anything about a star. Took them home and stuck them under my bed for about a year. Had to have the 45 reblued but the Star is beautiful. I had a hard time finding ammo for it because 9mm luger wont work. Finally found 9mm largo, great pistol. The grips are wood with a thumb rest.

I recently ordered a Star Model A Super from Sarco. I won't be able to take it home from the FFL until Tuesday, though. I was able to hold it while we got the paperwork filled out. It was great! It feels much better and more balanced than my Norinco 45. It fits my hand much better than any 1911 has.
I will sell the Norinco and order one or two more with the $$. The parts guns at Sarco are only $99, and the magazines are 3 for $28.
There are a lot of people saying you can't fire .38 Super in these guns. I know this is BS. There is a guy by the name of Clark out there that is firing over maximum 9x23 Winchester handloads through them, with no damage to the pistol. He is loading 2 grains more powder than the maximum listed for 357 Magnum rounds, pushing a 158 grain bullet. If the pistol can handle that, it will definitely handle factory loaded 9x23 Winchester, never mind the .38 Super. I plan to use the Corbon 9x23 Powerball as my self defense round. I am just sorry I hadn't known what good pistols these are earlier.

Hey way to go… I had the same experience when I first picked one up… It fit my hand like a glove… Much better than a 1911… Are you saying that you can fire a .38 super or 9X23 Winchester without any modifications?

While I personally wouldn't recommend pushing my luck using 9x23 Win. in one, the will digest .38 Super just fine, but you will have to make a few slight mods to accomodate the rim. The barrel extension has to be shaved a bit and the extractor has to be undercut a hair just under the hook. Supposedly, some of these guns were modded at the factory for Super ammo, but I've never seen one.

I would NOT follow Clark's example - he has, by his own direct admission, overloaded pistols for the sole purpose of seeing how much they take before self-destructing. This can be deleterious to one's continued good health.

Be safe - use known safe loads.

We had several in '93 we had bushings(inserts) machined so we could fire reg. 9mm para. worked just fine I dont remember the specs on the insert but I do remember using locktite to keep them seated. When we were ready to sell them we used a broken case extractor to remove the inserts.
