I've never been hunting, shot a 30'06, or had any major interaction with firearms...
However:
I would think that if you shot it in the right place, maybe with a FMJ round, it could go all the way through. Two, same size enter and exit holes.
But don't take my word for it.
>.> I'm a freshman in Highschool that doesn't hunt stuff...
So yeah...
^_^' That's my two cents.

Many bullet companies make 110 bullets for the 06 and they should work ok. If you don't want anything left of what you shoot then the 30 carbine plinker at the higher vel. just evaporate some game however the also sometimes explode half way to the target. They had a write up in the gun mags on this subject a few years back and i tried it with only some success. I am going to load 110 gr. in my Russian 7.62x54r this week and hope the weather lets me see how this works out.

I'd Like to re-open this thred.
does any of you guys that have used an '06 for varmints considered it accurate enough for a long shot (250-300 yards on groundhog)? (were talking w/ average accuracy for 30-06)

lets call average accuracy 1" at 100yds, yup plenty accurate for popping groundhogs out to 300+yds.

Sighted in at 1 1/2",s high at 100yds you will be about dead on at 200yds and 6"to10" low at 300yds with most bullets 8" low. sam.

My buddy shoots all factory ammo in his and has shot 8 or 9 groundhogs with his this year already. a couple of them out around 300.

I have never had good luck with the 110,s but 125gr spitzers work. The truth is you don't need a special bullet.Your deer hunting loads work fine.Just make sure you have a long range beyond where you are shooting or a good backstop. sam.

(were talking w/ average accuracy for 30-06) | You can use it, but would be it be fun? I doubt it. The reason is because most varminters like to see if they hit the darn thing and if they did what happened to it. With that big a caliber the muzzle jump will be more than enough to make you lose sight of the target you are trying to hit. Even with a muzzle brake you won't see anything and I doubt you would want to walk out 300 yards to see where you had hit it. Just my opinion but a 22-250 would be as large a caliber as I would use on such animals if you are trying to shoot them for fun.

very good reasoning, im looking for a deer rifle, it will basically be my own all around rifle and there is no shortage of rifles in 30-06 locally, so im looking into that. I was also looking into a .243 but i feel its better suited for varmints than deer, and its not a shoulder breaker. i can only afford one rifle, but it want it to be a quality one.

25-06 is the best middle ground for up to deer size game and can occasionally be used on varmints. It is accurate as well as light on recoil.

Nothing wrong with 30-06 on varmints on up to big game! I used one for years my old man still has one centerfire for all purposes the 30-06. As I have stated on other threads I started my three boys out on a 30-06 when they were 12 years old, they shoot p-dogs, and deer mostly and they will never need another gun as their 30-06 will work for any game animal big or small in North America!!!!

Big shrek I will try on the p-dog but I usually aim for the center of the p-dog and it looks like that picture of the poor bunnywabbit! LMAO Ive killed alot of coyotes with my 06 and still sold the hide. Didnt get much as the fur prices have really sucked for quite a few years, or the coyote was so mangy I dont even touch it. The last 5 years Ive killed several coyotes with the 06 using 180 gr slugs and it doesnt hurt the hide as some have said on here! One was a young pup trotting (about 7lbs.) at a 1/4 mile.

It will take allot of field work to get the load right for yotes. The 30-06 just is allot of gun for smaller animals. As stated before if you want the pelts, this is a good excuse to get another rifle.... I do own a 30-06, it was my first rifle at the age of 14, kicked like hell. It is more then accurate enough to kill small game.

im currently looking at a savage mod. 110 or 111, in not sure which, with accu trigger in 308 win cause thats what they have, i wont be shooting out to distances where the 30-06 would make a difference
seems like a good deal to me at 400 with scope and sling
