Ok, before laughing at me, please remember I just got this AK and this is only the second time I've had it on the range with no experience with AKs before this.
Ok, so I went out to a new range today and had way too much fun with my AK. Put 100 rounds down range and spent a good deal of time rapid firing (not every shot, though). Here's my question: She was smoking like she was on fire 50 rounds in. Is that normal? She wasn't on fire, I checked, but the smoke pouring out of her was like nothing I've experienced before. When I was done with her and switched to the handguns, my only option was to lay her on the table I was shooting from so she could cool down. She cooled very quickly, I think, but she did leave a minor melted spot on the plastic under her barrel (which wasn't even touching the plastic). The barrel got kind of ashy looking, too (still black, but not the same as when we went in, if that makes sense). It looks better now, but still slightly ashy, now it just looks dirty; it was worse on the range. Normal?
FYI: Ammo used was 123 grain Hot Shot from one of those tins of 700 rounds.

I'm thinking it's kind of normal with them, not 100% positive. I haven't shot one at all either. If there was a lot of oil down the barrel or in the action, that also might explain for the smoke? But if it was hot, it'll probably smoke, especially if there was oil residue in it. Oil does smoke when heated.
I'm sure someone else will have some feedback. But again, it may be normal. In some of the you tube I've watched, they get them smoking not to far in. But then, I'm not sure how much they shot them before starting the tape rolling?

I was thinking it may be left over cosmoline. I never did manage to get the hand guards off when I was cleaning it the first time through. I spent two hours brushing that stuff off, but never got the whole thing cleaned out. And it had a funky smell to it (yes, I stuck my nose to the hand guard to see if it was burning or if it smelled like my shotgun after a day of sporting clays). So it could have been cosmoline burning off. It could have just been the rifle heating up from rapid fire. I dunno.

I think because it was smoking after 50 rounds out of the 100 rounds she put through it was the main reason of concern I think?
For my informational purposes, and hers and others to I suppose that may not know, other then oil residue or left over or missed cosmo, what is it about these that cause them to smoke and even get so hot? Is it just the rounds them self, the powder in the Wolf rounds? Any special reason/s?

It may be that Hot Shot is "dirty/sooty" like many of the Wolf rounds. Try something like Golden Tiger that I found to be fairly "clean/non-sooty" or Winchester White Box and see if you're still getting the smoke.

Golden Tiger runs comparably to Wolf, +/- a cent or two a round. The cheapest I've seen it is $169+shipping for 1000 rounds.
PM me and I'll send you a link to it. I haven't yet gathered enough money to buy it and don't want it to disappear before I get a chance to get it at that price, as most places have it at $175-199 per thousand.

Old post but there all gonna smoke no matter what ammo, just the oil in the stock and barrel heating up, wont bother a AK at all, I have bump fired my AK with the 75 round drum till i was waiting for it to catch fire LOL If ya cant get it clean just blow it out with Brake fluid and it will take all that old cosmo off it , I clean mine that way after i shoot it all the time
