Has anyone heard of a .22-06. This is something from my childhood, somewhere around 1960. One of the fellows in my fathers hunting group had one. All I really remember is dad had absolutly no use for it, I guess that is why I can remember it today. He called it a worthless round. Dad had three guns. A 12ga. shotgun, a .22 long rifle, and a 30/30 win. Everything he hunted was with these. I was just wondering if it was just Dad being Dad, or is there something really wrong with this round. I haven't heard anything about it since.
Well i'm sure it has existed. The Wildcat crowd loved to modify the 06 because there was such a surplus of brass, rifles, and other componets. Here is a link to a website I found. I guess it's called the 22 Newton. 22 Newton
In the 1960's a number of people were into what you might want to call extreme wildcatting. Yes, what you describe was done and no it was not a good idea. It was more a test case of how far can you take an idea. I recall one person calling it an attempt to out-Weatherby Roy Weatherby.
Overbore does have limits.
Also, several people put .40 caliber bullets into the .30-06 to make what they called 400-06. Again, not exactly a success. The same was done with the .375 H@H bullet into the .30-06 case. On getting to a more
practical level 8mm Mauser bullets were put into the .30-06 case as well as the .338 Winchester magnum bullet.
I read in a handloading magazine years ago about a few guys who tried to neck a .50 BMG case down to .22 cal. They couldn't even get it to shoot through the chrony. They said the second it left the barrel it would veere right. Talk about extreme overbore.
The only cartridge I know of was the 22/06 Easling. It was made by necking down a 30/06 to 22 Cal.and shortening the neck .030. The shoulder angle is a little steeper than the 06 shoulder only known load was a 89 gr. bullet using 59 gr. of H870 powder, and a velocity of 3455 Fs.
Can't give you any particulars but I herd it called a 22 cheatah was supposed to be super fast up in the domain of the 220 swift and the 22-250. some one is now making saboted 30-06 with 22 caliber bullets
