Hello! Well, Mosenitis strikes again. Today I pick-up a 1939 M91/30 from Izhevsk. I know it's not a collectors item, but the rifle is in nice condition and it called my name while I was walking by. After taking a close look at my new rifle I noticed two markings that I cannot identify and I do not find a reference on the 7.62x54r.net. The stock of my new Mosin has the mark "3" and "R". Anyone has an idea what they stand for? Thanks!
Wether they are known or not is half the fun. I love going over a Mosin and trying to identify all the markings. It's just so much history, and something prety unique to the Mosins I believe.

Let me ask another question (I should probably start a new thread for this, but anyway): I just picked-up my new 1939 M91/30 and sat down last night to give it a good cleaning. The bore was just filthy. I cleaned and cleaned for about 1 1/2 until I ran out of patches (and beer), but the bore still looks pretty dirty to me. The grooves are back to shinny at this point, but in between it is still pitch black. I used gun oil, Hoppe's No. 9, and even some action cleaner. Now, I plan on cleaning it again tonight (after I pick-up more patches), but I wonder if the bore will ever be as nice and bright as it was in '39. What I'm wondering about is, when is a 69 year old bore (that likely went through WWII) clean enough? I know that the conventional wisdom says that "when your patch comes out clean", but will it ever, and does it need to?
Dark bores are very common. I have a M91 I have cleaned probably 30 times and I am still getting stuff out. At some point you have to wonder if you are hurting the bore rather than helping? There is a post on here from Billy which describes cleaning the bore electro-chemically. I tried it on a spare barrel, and it works really good. My only concern is what effect it will have on the bore if left too long!

Any bore. Using vinegar (an acid) and electricity could etch the bore if allowed to "cook" too long. There instructions in that post does give a time limit if I remember correctly. It really does work well. It pulled a lot of crud out of the barrel I tried it on.

on most all of mine none on the type 53 and not many on the latest stock I am refinishing but all the rest have some marks most of which no one knows what they are
I have stocks with 3 cartouches, and stocks with 18! Go figure. Marion, do you think it is a matter of few in the war period, and every Bubbavich afterwards, or what? Some speculation has been forwarded that cartouches and stamps have been added after the fact. What say you?
