Okay, this is, perhaps, one of the most far-afield topics I think I've posted here. But, since I started hanging out here, I've seen that we have a pretty diverse group of clever folks. So you may be able to help me with a bit of a dilemma I'm having.
I am currently employed and have been with the same company for just over three years. I work for one of the largest travel companies on the planet, in their accounting department, and also have direct contact with hotel vendors all over the world as part of what I do. Frankly, I think I've gone about as far as I can go there. I am bored with my job, although my performance is excellent - I have been recognized for it numerous times - but I want something that will interest me.
I'm not in any sort of desperate need to leave, but I want to expand my horizons. I am not a CPA, although I have prior accounting experience from a position I held before moving back to Las Vegas. It's a bit of a career change for me, and I think it's time for another change.
I have a great many skills, some of which I've gained from work experience, others from hobbies and education. I've graduated from college twice, but my degrees aren't seeing much use just now. Before moving here I was a mortician. But no one in the city was hiring, or at least, not for money I'd consider working for. I won't take a pay cut, not even to get back into something I truly felt satisfied doing.
I've worked in accounting, for nonprofit organizations, and in mortuaries. I am highly detail-oriented and in terms of accuracy in any task, when charted, I run near 100% (some Financial Operations offices track errors). I've also done a fair bit of "hobby work". I've been in the haunted attraction business seasonally for 11 years now, performing, as well as doing costuming and some tech work. I don't have a real portfolio, as I've never considered it anything but a hobby, but I still have samples of my work online and a few things I've kept over the years. I have 2.5 years of classical voice training, and did some performances in the Bay Area, but again, more as a hobby than anything else. I have a background in the sciences from my education (both degrees, in fact), but aside from the mortuary work, haven't used it much.
The real point of this is that I'm seeking advice. I am certain that there are many jobs out there that I've never heard of that might be ideal matches for me. But of course, I've no way of knowing what they might be. I'm wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions or opportunities for someone who is highly intelligent, creative, extremely detail-oriented, and has a wide range of experience but can buckle down and do business when he has to. I can, I truly believe, learn anything if I am interested enough.
A few years ago one of my friends was bored in her office job and decided to take some time out by taking a job on a yacht for the summer season, years later she's still there and having a ball! Yáll only get one chance at life!
I know that you wouldn't want to take a salary drop but life is about living not all about money. When I'm bored in a job, I move on, up or down it doesn't matter as long as there's food on the table.
you wont have to pay social security ever again, they just require you have a valid drivers license, be over 23 years, be a legal us citizen, have any
type of degree, and to sell your soul....................ya

I spent my life after the military in the construction industry, because I loved it. I had to take a cut in pay a few times, but it was only until I proved myself with a new employer. Find something that truly fascinates you, and keeps you from boredom, and go for it, even if it means a temporary pay cut. That way, you can live the rest of your life with satisfaction. Good luck!!!

I must say i too love construction and even though i am in school I know if i do not like engineer i always have that to fall back on but right now i think i am going to like engineering.
Interesting notions so far. Mostly I'm looking for a notion of what I want to do. My primary line (mortician) isn't happening here anytime soon, unfortunately, so I need to find something that blends what I've done and can do with something I can stand doing...if that makes any sense.
I'm hardly averse to physical labour, I've done some contracting off the books for a few friends, nothing huge, and mortuary work can be a bit more physical demanding than some think. Mind you, I get enough exercise now as it is...
It's a toughie. I'm really wondering what sort of jobs exist that I just don't know about that would be a good fit. That's the part that's driving me up the wall.
