I have a pre ban Chinese with some sort of widget mounted on left side of the receiver that looks like some sort of optics mount. Does anyone have any info on this gadget?
Does it have a dove tailed track to it? I know that there are some mounts for the SKS that do mount to the reciever, infact those are the about the absolute best mounts for them because of how stable they are. Just look for the track I was talking about and let us know.
The whole piece is narrower where it is riveted to the receiver. It would be considered dovetail in that aspect. It has no visible track, it is shaped like an upside down triangle w/a flat top, the narrow side is next to the receiver.
I'm a little confused on It's construction here. I'll try to find some links to something that looks something like you're talking about and post them, maybe one of them will be it, then we'll go from there. If you ever get a chance to get a picture of it up, that would help alot.
Quote from Uberfaq..."The Chinese intensions were to create as many scope arms as they did the preinstalled base plate found on their commercial Type 56's and other firearms. Then the U.S. banned the importation of these rifles from the China. They saw their market dry up and stopped production of the mount's bracket. There are probably thousands more scope rails then there are mounts. I hear of them now and again, but I've only ever seen one or two at gun shows attached to rifles. I've never seen one sold separately, since there is no reason to take it off the rifle once it's on. Navy Arms used to sell them, but they have been out for years now. I don't really know if there's really a name for it so I usually ask about the "SKS Cowboy Companion" scope mount or Type 89 mount and people generally know what I'm talking about. Both books I've read call it a Type 89 telescopic sight or BZM-1. These names probably refers more to the scope used than the mount's name. Telescopic sight implies little if any magnification, 4x at best. "

As this weapon was pre ban, assembled in China using Tula Armory soviet parts with matching ser. numbers, and short barrel with bottom of bayo lug milled off, it probably is what you advised. It was imported by Navy Arms Co. of Ridgefield N.J. It was never issued (leftover parts shipped to China). It has 10 rd. mag and the bayo relief cut in the stock was very neatly filled with matching grain wood. OBTW.... it cost 59.00 and came with 300 rounds of ammo stamped 964 and 75 on the bottom of the casing, already loaded in stripper clips. The optics mount is dovetailed with a rearward protruding detent clip to hold whatever was mounted in place. Thanks for the great info. Maybe someone knows what can be mounted thats on the market today.
the ammo headstamp jndicated that iy was made in PRC/China in 1975 according to two different charts. Only fired about 30 rounds of it because it was really messy stuff, but for its age it did all rightthanks for all the help and info!
