| I don't know what all the complaining about the recoil of a 44 magnum is all about. I shoot a S&W 629 classic all day with 240 grain jacketed soft point and love it. It is the gun I started with and I am used to it. I guess if your used to a smaller caliber then you mite think it has to much kick. It is very accurate and fun to shoot in my opinion. |

You can reduce the felt recoil by putting on the older model Pachmayr "Presentation" grips in the large size. With a 44mag, you will have to end up reloading in order to shoot it a lot. Pick a load about 900 fps and its will be comfortable to shoot. If you want to shoot a lot of heavy loads, the Ruger Super Blackhawk with Magnaports really shoots nice. Has 357 recoil. The 300 grain bullets will work in the M629 but will shoot high.

I used my 629, 6"bbl while bear hunting a year ago. When that bear came at me I shot it twice, the last shot in the top of it's head just a few feet from my crotch. It dropped at the shot. The funny thing is, I felt no recoil. Kinda like a .22. I guess when SHTF, the recoil is negligible.
BTW, I'm gonna sell my New Model SuperBlackHawk, 7 1/2" bbl. What should I ask?

I inherited a Model 629 Classic 8 3/8" 44 Magnum from my Dad in 2001. I've never fired it. It has an issue with the cylinder alignment. It won't close. I'm sure Smith and Wesson would correct the issue free of charge since I have the original warranty if I were to get off my butt and send it back to the factory. It looks like it would be a nice shooter. It has a Leupold scope that is silver to match the stainless finish of the revolver.

And to think of all the 29's and 629's I've had and sold/traded. I used to be comfortable shooting 44 mags; even had a 454 SRH that I could handle. Age and arthritic hands makes it uncomfortable now. However, I shoulda kept one of those-- a 629 Mountain Gun!

I have a 629 44. As far as I'm concerned. My two 41 mags. one a model 57 Snith & Wesson. the other a Ruger Bisley hunter 41 mag, put the 44 mag to shame. I use mine for hunting. Sorry but you 44 has nothing on my 41's

I love the S&W 44s. Carried a 4" SS mountain gun for years until the 329PD titanium arrived. Now there's a gun. Extremely lightweight. Extremely easy to carry all day. Extremely easy to shoot with 44 specials. Extremely painfull with magnums.
My new favorite carry gun. Also have the 296 titanium for an ankle gun. Also a hoot to shoot.

You are definitely right about the difference in the recoil between a .44 special and a .44 magnum. I have shot .44 special loads out of my Smith&Wesson model 29 8 3/8" bbl. the recoil is definitely more comfortable but the .44 special casings are just a tad bit shorter than the magnum causing a lot of fouling at the front end of the cylinder just before the headspace. Another thing to consider if you shoot the .44 special loads out of the magnum pistol is to stay with jacketed bullets instead of cast lead ones. The lower velocity on the .44 special cast bullets causes massive lead fouling in the bbl which takes forever to clean out. I tried it once at an indoor range that required cast bullets only and will never do that again. I fired a Desert Eagle semi-auto .500 magnum and found it to be a very impractical gun because dinosaurs don't exist anymore.

Hogue grips really helped with recoil of Model 29, give them a try.

I like the 629. Its easy to point and shoot. Its accurate. Easy to clean up. Too much power for a carry piece I think. But overall fun to shoot. Mine is the lower right corner.
Just under the Model 13 .357.

Just under the Model 13 .357. | Hey Capt'n, I didn't know you had some brooms, fill me in. I have a repro stock and holster I want to sell if your interested.
The .44mag is not bad to control if you get the right grips that fit your hand. I'm found of these old Bill Jordons.

I love the old S&W .44mag revolvers and have a few. In a 629 , I have a regular 4" bbl model, a 4" bbl mountain gun, and a 3" bbl model. Thy will all get your attention when you pull the trigger but, that 3" bbl gun is pretty brutal with full house loads! Awesome guns!
