What kind of ammo do you use?

Hey guys. I was wondering what kind of ammo you used in your Mosins. ^-^' I'm not exactly sure on what to get. I've compiled a list from cheapest to most expensive ammo on Centerfire Systems' Website... So if you could point out the best deal or something that'd be awesome.

Also, I've noticed that some have steel cases.

What's the main difference between the steel and brass cases?

Surplus Ammo at about $5.00 for 20 rounds.

7.62x54R Ammo
Bags of 20
Part #AM54R3 - AM54R3

Wolf "203GR Berdan Primed" for about $9.00 for 20 rounds.

7.62x54R SP 203GR
Berdan Primed 20rd
Part #AM762106 - AM762106

And both the Wolf "Gold Line" and Sellier & Bellot for $19.00 for 20 rounds.

Brass is softer, and may be reloadable. On average I think sticky bolt happens more often with steel. Prices I dont know. I reload.

In general steel cases are cheaper to manufacture than brass.

In regard to ammo prices I would agree with Billy. Surplus is cheap and it shoots just fine.

I buy the cheapest milsurp ammo I can find. I get it local 20/$4 so thats really convenient. I haven't had a problem at all so far and have put about 300 rounds through it, kicks more than the Winchester and is louder, but I like it that way. Just gotta clean it well after each use, but I like cleaning it. And you can't beat $4 for 20 rounds local, especially when you are entertaining friends.

Is is of lesser quality, though? I guess that's my main question...

Because if it were cheaper to make, wouldn't all cases be made of steel?

I'm sure there's a reason for it...

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding that steel cases are cheaper to manufacture but over time they are harder on your receiver and action. More wear compared to brass cases over a long period.

Some regions have steel more readily available than brass, that may also influence what the casing is made out of...especially since a lot of this milsurp ammo is not from the US.

That's kinda what I thought too, sense steel is harder than brass.

As in Wisconsin? Actually, no. I'm a member at Beloit Rifle Club, and I have a few old quarries that I shoot large rocks into smaller rocks with mil-surp ammo, over near Monroe, WI.

Yes, Bristol, WI. Quarries are always nice. Is your club open to the public?

On the rare occasion that I shoot MilSurp I like Bulgarian (usually 300 rounds of heavy ball (180gr.) for about $45 +shipping (for me that's about $63 shipped). That's about $4.20 a box. Yes it is corrosive... but it is brass cased, very consistant loads, and kicks like a mule. Save the brass, as it is easily recylce-able.

I like reloading my own. A little more expensive than MilSurp but better fitted to the rifle and a lot more consistant, accurate, and of course non corrosive. Plus it's just fun to do.

Only for actual shooting competitions (which seems to be just about every day).

Here's the new website. It's far from done, but getting better. Welcome to the Beloit Rifle Club Inc. :

i save my reloading efforts for guns that are either..
very accurate -my 308
really expensive to feed -454casull/45 l.c.
my mosins are almost disposable they are so inexpensive .
i dont even worry about accuracy with them.
if i can hit the clanger @ 100 yds. im happy!

When I buy commercial ammo at all, it's Wolf Gold, when it's on sale at gun shows at an attractive price. Normally, I buy Winchester brass and reload.
