At 3 am this morning, I woke up to a car skidding to a stop. Car burglars were caught in the act of breaking in cars three blocks away and they ditched their car right in front of our house after ramming a cop car. Three people jumped out and one started for our property. We have a chain link fence on one side and I knew were he was going. Grabbed the 12 ga. and went out back and just waited at the back corner of the house for him to jump the fence, and sure enough here he came. I pointed the mag-lite at him and said don't even think about it. He ran back into the street and the cops grabbed him two houses down. I just went back in the house and watched them do their take down. The other two got away. All had priors so it is just a matter of time for them. First incident in 30 yrs in our neighborhood. The wife said, glad we had a gun! The mag-lite worked!
This is the sort of stuff we prepare for and hope we can handle if it comes.
Although...I always wonder why they run when confronted with a firearm? Aren't they afraid of being shot for not listening, or are they just in a panic?
And I want to know what you had too. I need to save up and get my shotgun accessories already.
So I did OK huh? The perp couldn't see anything with the light in his eyes, [not even the S/G], he also tripped my security lights, which spooked him good. Glad I could help, if he would of came in the yard, he could of jumped another fence and escaped. That's how the other two got away. I was packing a 22" Mav 88 with # 4 shot and 000 buck for the last three. I figure if the #4 doesn't stop them I would look better legally using 000 Buck next. I'm pleased with the truglo sights too. I did what I wanted to do by keeping him in the street. It was a good safe take down, for a guy who rammed a cop car. He deserved a Tasering. He was unarmed, but the drug dog hit on his car. I went back in the house immediately to avoid the "gun" issue. The only one that heard me was him.

Good story, but perhaps not especially smart. You walk out into the back your with a shotgun . . . only to get shot down by two officers in pursuit from the next block over. Let the professionals do their thing.

I was waiting for someone to say this...
OK DOOKIE...go stand in line to give up your guns for a pair of Nike's, because apparently you don't believe you are capable of properly using a firearm and that the goverment should be the only ones with them. BYE.

I'd say he was reasonably discreeet and didn't overstep, Db. It's not like he ran out the front door with shotgun in hand to join the chase.
He was aware of where the officers were, and he was aware of where the perp was, and I have no problem at all with him stopping the scum from coming into or through his yard.
"Let the professionals handle it" is one of the most over-used phrases in the country. If you listen to the advice-giving nannies, we shouldn't even change a light switch ourselves because we might get shocked, or change our own oil because we might not tighten the drain plug properly. And Heaven forbid we should actually take steps to secure our own property and person...
