hey guys,
so i recently picked up a remington model 700 cdl in .300 WSM. The existing butt pad on it is made of very hard rubber so i figured i'd replace it with a limbsaver one to save my shoulder's life. i went to take the pad off by loosening the screws but after loosening them i found out that the pad is glued on! is it ok to just cut it off and sand off the rest of the rubber down to put the new one on or not? and if so should i glue the new one on as well? what is the process here? any input would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't cut it off if at all possible. I have never heard of Remington gluing a recoil pad on especially not on a cdl. I guess anything is possible. I would try the hair drier and then I would probably try to dismantle the pad from the butt forward. First I would call Remington to make sure the thing is glued on and maybe they can give you a suggestion. And of course there are always good gunsmiths that specialize in fixing others mistakes like gluing butt pads on.
Sounds to me like the thing has just adhered itself over time to the stock, it probably isn't glued at all, but could still be tricky to get off without doing damage. I think Mooseman has the right idea with the hair dryer. I used a heat gun to pull up some old vinyl flooring that was glued down and it worked like a charm. Good luck!
