cleaning between different ammo

I am about to test about 20 brands and velocities of 22 lr ammo in my Nylon 22. Initially 5 shot groups to throw out the fliers. In the second stage, i will take the best of the initial and repeat and again select the best after which I hope to have narrowed the selection to three. I will then fire 10 shot groups fo the final selection.

I don't wish to comprimise the results so I was thinking to foul the barrel with 5 shots.

MY QUESTIONS ARE :

Does my protocol seem reasonable?

How should I clean the bore between brands short of a full cleaning?

Mechanically sound

Dan Veilleux: Sir; sound appropriate to me. You say Nylon and I can only assume 66 77 model 10 and whats the black one?

Nylons historically ate just about anything and did that fairly well.
Your testing will be interesting. Would you post your results?

Cleaning between shooting is needed.

Too; allowing the barrel to remain constant in temperature. Heated actions and barrels will lie.

Seems Reasonable...
I would pull a boresnake ONCE thru after each brand of ammo used...

I plan to do some similar testing, and in a similar way. Will use a boresnake between brands tested, and plan to shoot 5 groups of five of each brand. I will decide after I look at them whether or not to include the first group of 5 in the average for the brand.

There is another method which involves shooting more groups and each group is two shots. You use a statistical process (which is available in Excel) to determine if the one set of groups (and the ammo used for it), is better or not. Overall probably fewer shots to do the evaluation, and more confidence in the results. But, means using more targets, so I have not decided yet. See this link. It is kind of heavy, but if you skip down to the part where he shows his test results and how to duplicate it in Excel, it is not too difficult.

Testing loads

Incidentally, the need to clean between brands is controversial. So think it is required, and some not. The risk of cleaning is damage to your barrel. I think that risk is minimized with a boresnake.

1 tight fitting dry patch between brands, followed by 5 rnds of the new ammo to foul the bore, then fire your groups. repeat for as many brands as your using.

I any such test, make sure that every subject (Brands of ammo) are treated the same as much as possible.

Whatever you do, be consistent.
