In any event ya' just have to overlook some things and learn from others.

I really have issue with this "brainwashed" comment... as do most other veterans. Ask seabeescotty his thoughts on that comment. WE are not "brainwashed"... some are what is called "misguided" by their own personality... or maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer... as you say it... but those "problem children" are fixed by the NCO's.

I respect the opinions of just about every one,but don't always agree with them.Do you really think it is not possible for soldiers to have differing opinions on any given subject? Do you think that it is impossible that some NCOs or commissioned officers do not impress their opinions on some of their subordinates?
If you do not think what I say is possible,I will not argue with you,I will stand corrected.
No offense meant to anyone.

Sure I do. Opinions are like a-holes, we all have them. NCO's are known to impress on their subordinates by virtue of position, tenure and experience.

There ARE some subordinates who are just not fit mentally to be in the services and trust me when I tell you, they ARE weeded out and discharged.

Christians have put their faith in the Holy Bible, not by blind faith. Because the findings of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1960's and a lot of other archaeological findings prove that the bible is the inherent, infallible word of God. Enough said.

To be fair, Christians married as young as 13 year olds, just the age to bear a child. Back then it was very common. Well, then perhaps you can explain other archaeological findings, mainly the ones we call dinosaurs and that are millions of years old?

I have a question for you Larry. Why does no major publication, newspaper, magazine or any news channel every display the total number of american soldiers killed in Iraq? Why IS THAT NOT ON THE FRONT PAGE? Nearly, 4,000 dead now and counting. When will it end? Is it worth it? Is it really worth our lives? Will there actually be a greater good out of this war? Ask yourself that.

#1. I took the effort to capitalize the A in American for you.

#2. It is not on the covers of all the magazines and newspapers because it is old news, not to mention an election year.

#3. You are asking me questions I cannot hope to answer. Ask the people running for office for the answer, then hold them to it, not me.

#4. Ask yourself why you are asking me that. I am a member of the military... a tool of the Govt. Ask them these questions, not me... my opinions on this matter are irrelevant.

Old news? People die over there every day. I have family over there, and friends, and I don't want anything to happen to them. I want this crap to end. Why are they not revealing how many Americans (hey I used a capital) are dying? They are afraid there will be mass protests like Vietnam is my guess.

I was asking for your opinion, sorry if it was too vague to draw that conclusion. You do have an opinion on why these statistics are not reported to the American public every day don't you?

So, just doing your job huh? Nothing to see here move along huh? I hate to say this because you don't seem like someone who is "brainwashed" but that is a very brainwashed answer. I am sure it may be harder to answer you honest opinion being in the Military. It is us against them at times like this and you don't want to go against your brothers in arms. I don't hold that against anyone, I would do the same.

However, I digress, the middle east is never going to have peace ever. It has been conquered and fought over since the beginning of our existence, all the way back before the Persian empire. It has been fought over religion and realestate since the beginning of man.

The media in our country is controlled politically, but its not all left wing liberal bias, I mean just look at who both Fox and Viacomm support and back? The problem is, we don't have enough media companies. Some countries have dozens of major media companies, we have maybe a half dozen, most of them owned by either Disney or Viacomm. The bias is profit my friend, its all about the money. How can they make the most money.

I have friends over there too ... so I am not attempting to minimize this in any way, shape or form.

My opinion is that this is a politically charged war. The Generals were not "allowed" to prosecute this war as needed. Politicians play too important of a role in warfare when they should leave the war fighting to the professionals, thus hog-tying them. I give you the Somalia breakdown... Clinton disapproved the use of Spectre gunships... and we all saw what happened.

So, just doing your job huh? Nothing to see here move along huh? I hate to say this because you don't seem like someone who is "brainwashed" but that is a very brainwashed answer. I am doing my job. I have refused orders in my past (risking my 15 year career) and I'll do it again if necessary. My bothers in arms are just that, my brothers, I will not turn on them. I will... turn on a politician in a heartbeat. They have no clue.

However, I digress, the middle east is never going to have peace ever. It has been conquered and fought over since the beginning of our existence, all the way back before the Persian empire. It has been fought over religion and real estate since the beginning of man.

... which is why we support our Allies... BUT leave the sand to them. I'd rather see that entire place turned to glass... but that is my opinion, not that of many others or the Govt. You asked, I answered. Nothing grows there or can be could there that we cannot find in our own land.

... read the responses below each statement you made above...

The problem with the media is that the news they expel is controlled/censored by their ownership. Whatever their political affiliation, they only show what supports their opinion.

MSNBC = Liberals

CNN = Liberals

Fox = Conservatives

... etc. etc...

You are forgetting the plethora of newspapers and radio stations owned by Disney and Viacom. Go here and see just what Fox owns:

It looks like though the Viacom/CBS split left Viacom with more of the pop culture (money making) programs and CBS got the rest of the media.

After listening to the last few posts I don't feel as GUILTY as I did.
I,too am a vet,62-66,but I don't agree with everything the recruiter says, however he has a right to say it,and it is his job.
After four years reality kind of sinks in.
Still respectful

Media is meda! Not fact. Nothing is reported without some slant or bias. Either political, religious or other. Your opinion is not only formed by what you see, hear, or read. But also by the biased "filters" you inherently apply.

The Palestinians want a Homeland. As long as they don't have one, Hamas and others will always be able to foment hatred and dissent. Period! Israel took their Nation State wth our help. They were not stupid in selecting it's locaton.

This is after all distant relatives fightng each other, not races. There are good Palestinians, as well as bad Israeli's, and vice versa! When religon is interjected into the debate, then there is always going to be extreme polarization.

We seem to think that we always know what is best for the rest of the world. We don't! Particularly here. I might also ask, how many of you have ever been to Israel, the Gaza, Lebanon, or Syria?

I would like to at least believe that Walter Cronkite did the news the way it should have been... and should be, without bias or censorship.

I've been 70 miles from the coast of Syria, my cousin almost died in Beirut, I almost died in Saudi Arabia. I know the area... at least from the negativity... examples of extremism.

I agree that the U.N. seems to think they think they know what is best for everyone... isn't. Since WWII, they've been horrible at decision making and a good example are the Balkans.

As for Israel and Palestine's fight over land, I have no real educated comment so I will refrain.

I agree... the other larger problem is:

The U.N. was born in 1942 by FDR (D) ... since then, the U.N. has been nothing more than a failure.

After 1938, Roosevelt championed re-armament and led the nation away from isolationism as the world headed into World War II. He provided extensive support to Winston Churchill and the British war effort before the attack on Pearl Harbor pulled the U.S. into the fighting. During the war, Roosevelt, working closely with his aide Harry Hopkins, provided decisive leadership against Nazi Germany and made the United States the principal arms supplier and financier of the Allies who later, alongside the United States, defeated Germany, Italy and Japan. Roosevelt led the United States as it became the Arsenal of Democracy, putting sixteen million American men into uniform.
On the homefront his term saw the vast expansion of industry, the achievement of full employment, restoration of prosperity and new opportunities opened for African-Americans and women. With his term came new taxes that affected all income groups, price controls and rationing, and relocation camps for 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans as well as thousands of Italian and German-Americans. As the Allies neared victory, Roosevelt played a critical role in shaping the post-war world, particularly through the Yalta Conference and the creation of the United Nations. Roosevelt's administration redefined American liberalism and realigned the Democratic Party based on his New Deal coalition of labor unions; farmers; ethnic, religious and racial minorities; intellectuals;[1] the South; big city machines; and the poor and workers on relief.

The New Deal coalition was the alignment of interest groups and voting blocs that supported the New Deal and voted for Democratic presidential candidates from 1932 until approximately 1966, which made the Democratic Party the majority party during that period, although they had only one Presidential majority after 1944. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his campaign manager Postmaster General James A. Farley created a coalition that included the Democratic party, big city machines, labor unions, minorities (racial, ethnic and religious), liberal farm groups, intellectuals, and the South. The coalition fell apart after 1968, but it remains the model that party activists seek to replicate.[1] Political scientists often call it the "Fifth Party System" in contrast to the Fourth Party System of the 1896-1932 era that it replaced.[2]

The Democrats support this:

Conventional Arms

Small arms

During conflicts, small arms and light weapons devastate children’s lives. The vast majority of casualties are directly attributable to these firearms. In addition to being victims, children have been taught to handle these weapons, which are lethal but light and easy to use. The use of small arms in conflicts has scarred and traumatised generations of children, both physically and emotionally. Long after peace agreements have been signed and the soldiers have gone home, the high prevalence of small arms in post-conflict society perpetuates a culture of violence. Some former combatants view the gun as their means to economic survival. In other cases, civilians arm themselves to protect their families and property. Children are then exposed to the dangers of weapons within their own homes, resulting in a vicious cycle of crime and violence.

The Spread of small arms creates a serious global problem and requires an equally urgent response because the lives and future of children are at stake. These weapons have extinguished more young lives than they have protected.” Carol Bellamy, Executive Director, UNICEF UNICEF was instrumental in putting the humanitarian costs of small arms on the agenda of the 2001 United Nations Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects. The conference helped build political will for action against small arms, including in relation to children. UNICEF also supports regional initiatives, which are essential to furthering programmatic work. UNICEF has collaborated with NGOs on the child-focused agenda within the (link to)International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), a forum for over 300 NGOs from around the world to network and undertake advocacy activities. UNICEF’s involvement encouraged many NGOs to include child-focused elements in their programming. UNICEF’s efforts are aimed at keeping weapons out of children’s hands and keeping weapons out of the hands of those who violate children’s rights. This is a daunting task given the scope and complexity of the problem.
UNICEF Actions:
  • In Albania, the UNICEF campaign ‘Don’t let guns kill our dreams’ highlighted the threat of small arms and light weapons. The campaign is linked with landmine awareness.
  • In Kosovo (Federal Republic of Yugoslavia), a survey seeks to identify and analyze the link between an increase in the use of small weapons and increased violence and intolerance among ethnic groups. UNICEF will use the findings to develop a communication strategy for young people and children, promoting safer and more tolerant behavior.
  • In Somalia, UNICEF uses a holistic approach to youth development in its efforts to eradicate the gun culture. Across the country, 35 youth groups are being set up to provide a space for boys and girls to cope with the violent disturbances of their lives. The groups provide recreational, sports and cultural activities, including traditional music, dance, drama and debate. They also organize and implement community development, peace promotion and disarmament.
  • Surveys in Tajikistan use participatory methodologies to gauge children’s perceptions of small arms and violence. The children’s views and the results of the survey will be used by local authorities, teachers, government representatives, community organizers and others to produce an agenda for action against small arms.

LarryO- You have given me food for thought. But too much of it is clouded by extraneous diatribe (read cut and paste)! Scale it down! Stick to your OWN thoughts! Some (read a LOT), is mere hearsay or political garble! Your conversation is much more apperciated and fresh when it is your own!.
