(You could do 2 pieces of .003 but the grease in between them can add a couple of tenths. like .0002 to .0004)

This is how my gunsmith did it but with a LIVE round, LOL. Anyway does it have to be a steel cartridge? All I have is brass. Is brass too soft? When I chamber a spent brass cartridge it gives some resistance because of the expansion and that might influence the diagnosis of the headspace. Does the steel not expand so much when it is fired?

SO I could make permanant go nogo by welding the feeler gauge to different empty shells. Think Ill do that. Thanks Mooseman. Is it the same tolerance for other rifles as well. Like Enfields and Mausers???? And do they take different size sparkplugs as well?

Arctic Alaska P-27 Dog teather to "Lotta" the shooter

I had a Mosin P-27 that was real rough, I dident want to even spend $25+ shipping for a coin head space gage so I used a piece of post-it-sticky on the bolt face and attempted to close the bolt on a live round, it was too tight, I had to force the bolt so I figured it was good, the bolt closed just fine on a live round before the post-it check and yes I did scrub out bolt face & chamber before doing this& removed the fireing pin, turns out that old P-27 was tight, head space check was complete since it was mid winter and was need of some light entertainment we did the live fire test with some fishing line as a fireing teather propped in a old car tire aimed at a dirt bluff, the fire test was uneventfull no scatterd parts, later I measured the OD" & case strech rim to shoulder compaired to the new rounds in the box "Wolf soft point" I used a fired casses from a "Savage 110 in 30.06 & Marlin 336 in 30.30win" and averaged out the case growth of all three.the case streched less than the 30.30 but more than the 30.06 useing dial caliper's, I guess it wasent too bad compareing a old war vet against 2 commercial job's.
I did look up the P-27 was a reworked model 91 from the Finnish war Independence this rifle had been thru the Winter War & The Continuation war well, I figure it must have been dropped at least 3 times for shure but it shure shoots good.

Capt'n...Its the same for .303 Enfields they space on the rim too...Mausers are a Different Ballgame and they headspace on the Shoulder so you need proper gauges for them.. I would not Weld the feeler gauge on as that can change the tolerance (Heat and cooling does things to metal)...a drop of super glue will suffice !

Brass will be Ok too for a while as the rim is Solid !!! Cut off the casing Behind the shoulder so the shoulder doesn't affect the measurement on a fired round!
I'm sure you can find a fired steel casing somewhere...
