Hi guys,

I have a 1971 model Winchester 94. It has a bunch of little pits all over the aluminum receiver. I've seen other 94's like that so I assume it is a chronic problem with the coating.

What coating do you fellows recommend that I can apply at home, fills the little pits and restore the receiver?

Mitch I may be wrong but i don't think that winchester ever made a 94 with an aluminum reciever. and the fix for the post 64 win. 94's is either rust bluing or one of the duracoat finishes sold by brownell's, they work very good. Just my opinion.

Now I'm not so sure that it is aluminum. It won't take cold blue, though:

all post 64 94's have to be refinished as i stated above, at least that has been my experience as a gunsmith. try removing the finish and using the duracoat it looks very good and is very tough.

Looks the same as my old buffalo bill.The reciever is made with a high nickel content and wont take a cold blue.Ill find the old thread i posted and put it in here.

Duracoat is probably the best, however, the cost is about $100 for a startup kit.

We have an airbrush set already. What else do I need for Duracoat?

Is this stuff any good?

You can get teflon/moly oven cure or gun-kote oven cure in an areosol can for about $30, look in the brownell's catalog. It also works very good and is pretty tough.
