Thank you for considering serving. I think your consideration of LE as another way to serve is a good one as long as you approach it as something completely different from the military. There's also the national guard as an alternative to the branches of the US military.

While the pay probably isn't very good, the training available may put you in good shape for a career afterwords. But you have to know what's there and take advantage of it. You could do the minimum for several years and come out unable to do a civilian job, or you could come out excellently trained and not even need veterans preference to be an extremely attractive candidate.
