Then buy a nice expensive M39 so it doesn't hurt so bad!

it'll take another range day, but I had a Eureka moment and think I've solved my parallax issues on my 91/30. I was always having to crane my neck and try to move my head forward to get the "shadow" to disappear when finally the penney dropped. I had a sissy pad on the butt of my 91/30. I went back to the metal butt plate and from sighting through the scope it appears that all is well. Now to get back to the range to confirm my theory.

Rear sight mounts and long eye relief scopes

Installed the cheap $12.00 rear mount weaver style base on three of my mosins. They all worked fine.. the problem with my mount the first time was the way I installed it. I forgot to take out the rear leaf spring. It was was causing problems with my verticle. I had to go back and remove the spring and everything was good.

M44 Mosin Nagant 91 Scope Short Mount $11.95 (also works on 91/30)
Red Dot 32mm for pistol $32.00 or
2-7x32 AIM long eye relief scope $59.00? can't remember

The second time I installed the mount on the rear sight base, I used a C Clamp to compress the rear sight spring so I could drive the pin out. Next I knocked out the rear mount spring. I then put the mount on and put the screw in and tightened everything up. Used a level for woodworking to verify that the scope base was parallel with the barrel. Installed the AIM long eye relief scope. Then used a bore laser sight tool to dial it in. Took it to the range and worked out the kinks.

So far I have put over 400 rounds through this rifle with this configuration.

At our outdoor shooting range, we shoot at a metal gong at 200 yards. My buddy shoots open sight and can hit the gong a decent amount of the time. We used copper washed surplus ammo. With the 2-7x32 scout long eye relief scope @ 200 yards my buddy hit the gong 5 out of 5 times before he handed me the rifle. I hit the gong 4 out of 5 times after that. The one that I did miss.. I think I missed only because I was being a puss and flinched because I was anticipating the kick. A slow steady squeeze of the trigger and a solid grip on that rifle goes a long way.

Hope this info helps.

No problem ejecting cases, but I do have to be careful when I operate the bolt - if I don't pay attention to how I'm holding it my hand bangs into the back of the scope. Loosening the rings and sliding the scope forward about 1/2 inch would cure that. So does banging my hand once or twice!
