Hi all, I'm glad to find this forum. I'll just jump right in.
Does anyone have any experience with those long eye relief sights for Mosin Nagants? They replace the rear sights, and are probably less preferable to "real" scopes. However, I know next to nothing about machining and would rather not chop up my MN just to add a scope, so do the long eyes provide decent optics?
Would it be best to put it on a M91/30, or would one of the carbines still be decent with a scope?

Mounted correctly, LER scout scopes are a great (low cost) asset. I have been using a 2-7 x 32 for about 2 years. Once I got the mount right (and it really is simpler than it looks) I love it. With my less than great right eye eyesight it improved my on target and grouping by 100% at 100 yards.
Done correctly you will be able to not only cycle rounds easily, but load using stripper clips.

who's mount did you install? i've got my eye on darrells, but it costs as much as my m44 did.
The scout scopes come in several flavors. tmfun chose the fixed focus 4x. But there is also a 4.5x and 2x-7x zoom. Illuminated reticles are also avaialble (but haven't seen the zoom version for a while). I like the zoom, but any of these LER scopes will work. They aren't Nikon or Leupold, but for ~$75 thew work fine.

Thanks for the links. I may buy from the ebay store tmfun linked to, although I might go for a 2-7x32. So all you need to do to remove the iron sight is to use a punch to remove the pins?
It works well, I have seen one set up once where the guy removed to sight base then taped and mounted the scope rail where the rear sight was. Look real nice very low profile, if I had a little more metal working capabiltys I would give it a try just a little worried any time I drill into a gun.

Yeah, I've thought about doing some minor "smithing" as well, but actually the current shooting position is pretty comfortable, and I typically do things spontaneously, so I have a bunch of other projects that need attention first (like cleaning the new M39, and final finishing a Richards stock that I've had now for 8 months).
I have a New Century Arms, 2-7 X 32 LER scope, I love it, me and GEO have about the same set up, with the "cheaper" rear site mount and the LER, if you get the cheaper "Ebay" type mount you have to use some lock tite to reduce the raddle on all of the screws but after you get them real tight they work fine. I haven't cut the mount down yet because it's a lot of hassle. I almost prefer my LER because it's realitively cheap and has a huge field of view.
