Comparing the spingfield xd and the s&w m&p can you help
Ok I know this is a smith forum, but I am looking for a ccw weapon, and I have narrowed it down to either the xd40 sub compact or the s&w m&p compact in 40. I read where the xd springfield went through a 20,000 round test like glock went through and it passed with flying colors and I like the safety's on it, but I also have been hearing great things about the s&w and I know that police departments are switching to the m&p 40 in groves. I am not sure what all the safties there are on a m&p wish there was a grip safety but the thing that makes me look at the m&p so hard is the fact that every person that tested the gun like gun and ammo etc. stated that the felt recoil on the m&p was less than the xd and other guns, so I am thinking getting back on the target would be quicker and easier on your hand. I know the m&p does not have the track record like the springfield xd so I am not sure what I am going to do, I was thiniking if the police are going to it over the xd there has to be a reason wish I knew what it was, any police out there that can tell me why you are choosing the m&p over the xd? thanks for your time.
I had an xd9 and really like it. Pretty accurate gun, but I personally didnt like the safety on it with the back part of the grip and the trigger both have to be pressed to shoot. That just didnt seem to safe to me. Id rather have a push button safety, but thats just my personal preference, which is why I recently sold my xd. Other than that, it was an awesome gun.
I own 4 M&P's: 9mm, 40, 40 Compact, and a .45. All are good, accurate guns and with the 3 diff. grips fit almost any hand! I carry my .40C mostly but also carry the .45ACP. The 9mm is for the range and my family to shoot due to cheaper ammo. Only problem I had is with Blazer Brass ammo (the cheap stuff) in the .45.
I owned 2 XD's but traded them for M&P's as the XD isn't left hand friendly. With the rebate S&W has now the price is nice plus 2 free mag! As for comparing to a Glock, I'll leave that up to others. I have never liked glocks so I can not give an unbiased opinion.
I was at Sportsman's Den in Shelby about 6 mths ago. He has 12 used glocks for sale and he said 10 was trade in's for M&P's by Police Officers! I also have read about many dept's and Highway Patrol units switching. You have to watch who puts the articles out though as it can be propaganda.

I traded my XD9 for a M&P. Ergonomics on the M&P felt much more comfortable, and the grip is about the best to ever fit my hand. Even though the M&P is a .40cal felt recoil seems as mild as my old XD in 9mm.
the only s&w's I own are 'round' guns. revolvers, and they are great. I have two j frames for ccw, I also have an xd sub 9, and a kahr pm9. they all work for carry depending on what I'm wearing and where I'm going. the xd sub 9 carries the most rounds, but also has the widest size, the j frames fit easily into a pocket, and the kahr is the smallest piece of all of them. never had any trouble with any of them.
i have a m&p 40 fullsize its my first gun its very accurate did some research before i bought it and found out its very reliable and easy to clean. i think the only down fall is price even with the rebate.im planning to get another one once i get my money from uncle sam.
You are going to find that most people on this board will recommend Smith and Wesson mp's. I own the exact model you are referring to and I can honestly say that it is amazing. Feels great (changeable grips) shoots great, and looks great. Plus with the current rebate, it is significantly cheaper than the XD.
(Plus IMO, the XD comes with stuff you aren't going to use....a mag holder?? It comes with a holster but you have to thread your belt through it every time you put it on....it is not a paddle holster....if I am not mistaken....useless in my mind)
Hope its not too late for this. I went to the store and was able to dry fire both the XD and M&p in the 45cal. There is a big difference in the trigger pull. If you are able to do this at your shop pull slow and you will see that the XD has alot longer pull and makes hard to know when its going to go bang. I bought the M&P and am more than happy with it.I plan on purchasing either the 40c or when available the compact 45
What a help !!! I am trying to decide what .45 I am going to get for Christmas 2008. I was looking at a 24/7 long slide. I looked at an xd once, but really didn't care for the feel. I just read a few articles about the M&P last night, and looked this thread up today. I have big hands, so I like big guns. I guess what I need to do now is find a shop that actually has an M&P on the shelf, you folks seem to be buying em all.
I have not tried an XD so I really can't anything bad or good about it. I however have an M&P 40c and only have good things to say about it. I can shoot 2" groups with it at 15' standing with the two handed grip.
Having shot both the 40 and the 9 compacts, I recommend the 9. The 40 was great but the nine shot unbelievable. If mag safety and internal lock are issues, make sure before you buy which model they have. I have seen them with and without the safeties. Cant beat wally worlds price on 9mm either.
Thanks ander254 that's a big help.
Where do you live at? I wish wally world sold guns here, but they don't. I'll have to order the 9mm compact.
Some people don't like the 9mm for some reason. I figure it's better than the rock I have sitting by my bed.
