Friendly People

In my 40 + years I have only been up and down the east coast a few times, and out to Missouri once (to attend Chapman Academy), and it seems like the farther south and west you get, the nicer people are. I stopped over night once in N.C. near Moorseville, and I was really shocked at how down to earth, laid back and friendly everyone was. Something to be said for that.. Up here most people are selfish snobs..I
hope to move down there some day. I can tell that the majority of you are good people and thats why I visit here as much as I can.
And no offence Moose or AK, you guys up in the cold are great folks too.

I'd have to agree with you. Not sure how far west that it goes but being in the North, Illinois, I can't stand the way people are around here. Another reason I want out. I mean I try to say hello and be nice to anyone and everyone I can and you're lucky if 2 people respond out of 5. That's pretty bad odds in my book.

Mad Hatter... as you are aware, I grew up in Connecticut. There are many reasons as to why I live in Wisconsin now... the attitudes and speed of life in the Northeast is mostly why I left. The crowds and "superiority" of the "elitists" were enough for me.

Are northerners welcome in the south, or does the old North / South skirmish still create a problem?

Larry, how is living in WI. ? I knew a girl from there, she was nice and down to earth, a little bit snooty, but a very pretty farm girl
who was into guns and cool cars.

They're pretty nice in ME, NH and VT, too. These three states are in the top four for least crime in 2007, too! Goes with low populations and rural settings.

I am glad I left Michigan for basically the same thing....so many forgot how to say "excuse me, good morning," etc...rush, rush, rush is the name of the game there..not everyone is that way, of course! I moved to Tennessee but the problem I am beginning to face is the fact that those same "Michiganders" are now down here...rush, rush, rush and lack of basic courtesy, LOL.

I find it's not a "North vs. South' kind of thing - it's fast Big City lifestyle vs. the slower and easier-going small town lifestyle.
Atlanta and Miami have all the "superior elitist" attitudes of any big northern city.

When I retire, it'll be a move to a small town, for sure!

You make an excellent point I wish to elaborate on. Basic courtesy... sometimes known as "common courtesy" ... there is nothing basic or common about courtesy anymore.

In some regions of this country... the speed of life is ridiculous... if you were to stop to smell the roses you'd be run over hearing an expletive shouted out the window.

One of the best examples was in the movie "My Blue Heaven" with Steve Martin. He goes to a grocery store and at the third time someone tells him to have a nice day, he turns and shouts, "Hey, F*ck YOU!" Does that pretty much sum it up or what?

I've heard the saying that an armed society is a polite society. That kind of a society sure makes sense...

This is also why I like my one stoplight 2,000 person town in the country. People are commonly courteous and there are not many places where shooting is not allowed... especially if you know the farmers.

Sounds very peaceful Larry and the many places to shoot is a definite bonus.

LOL! Larry, even I am guilty of that "speed of life" nonsense! My husband is a southerner and even though I feel I have slowed down some, he still remarks on how I am so impatient and am always on the go...from my mouth to my actions.

It has taken a few years to heed my husband's advice and to let the day go as it is meant to. But even through all that, I never forgot the common courtesies my mother taught me. That is what I wish to see more of.

LOL ... hate to say this... but when you get to the point of "hating" people, small towns work out best. Maybe it's the years of the military (noise, people) that have driven me to live in this small town, who knows.

When you get to know the farmers and landowners... you do not need to worry about ONLY having a 100' range, range fees, people shooting around you ... that you do not know, etc.

I generally am a slower driver than my wife... sometimes the New England temper comes out (when someone does something very stupid behind the wheel) and I'll put the pedal to the floor... but rarely.

I always leave early to be on time... and hate to be late. Maybe that is the military or the values impressed on me by my parents growing up in Connecticut.

In all reality... the only time saved speeding is heading cross country.

Speeding helps going "down" country also... lol Made it from Conn. to Fla. in 13.5 hrs. in a dually pickup, and had to stop 6 times for gas. Thankfully when gas was cheap.

Thats me also Larry.. I am never late.

Kentucky people are down to earth in central ky out of the cities like Louisville. and yer neighbors can't watch yer every move cuz they are pretty far away. out of spitting distance (unless you can outspit a 7mm mag) they are nice anyways.

Friendliest place I've ever been is Alaska, least friendly, Cali. In Hawaii I was treated pretty poorly until the locals got to know me and then they were right up there with some of the friendliest
