Fingerprint Lock

What do you guys think of this? For a gun lock, barrel lock, cabinet lock, etc.? It uses ur fingerprint scan to open the lock so kids can't open it and has a retractable cable. Probably would cost about $100.

Welcome to the forum. We can always use members who are thinking!

I like it. I like it a lot. There are already small gun safes for home defense pistols that use the biometric locking system. If you can make one that is inexpensive enough to sell for trigger/action locks, I think you'll have a ready market for it. If you can build one that will allow people to alter existing gun safes so they can only be opened by authorized figerprints, I think the market will be at least as big as for the trigger locks.

Thanks Cyrano for the feedback. I'm looking for about 10 more opinions (with both negative and positive comments!) so if you know anyone else that is a gun owner, collector or might have a need for this, please feel free to direct them to this thread!

I was wondering, how important would the size, color and shape be of the lock? Right now it's a bit bigger than the size of an average person's palm with no specific color set. Although I would imagine functionality would be more important? But perhaps not to gun collectors? Just rambling now....ha. Thanks again!

Sounds great, if you can make it release the gun as quickly as posible that would be best. the whole idea sounds great.

It would be dependent on electricity or batteries and thus subject to breaking down. Think about it. If it uses a cord running to the wall, what happens in a bad natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina? You lose power, you lose access to your firearms. Lose access to your firearms, you're vulnerable to any criminal who wants to take advantage of the breakdown in order caused by the disaster. While it is a great idea so long as it has power, if that power were lost, you'd be up the creek without a paddle.

The plan is to have it operated by lithium ion batteries which are relatively cheap and the type are small enough and there is a low battery indicator on it. The power is not on all the time, only when activated, so the battery life is about 18 months. Thinking maybe a beeping indicator (like cell phone does) for low battery might also be useful? What do you think?

Hey, it works for smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Once the 'beep bug' starts beeping, you know it's time to replace the battery you forgot to replace on advance/retard the clocks day in spring and fall. This would work the same way.

Sounds good to me too ! If'in your going to build this put a tiny l.e.d lite near the top edge and then you can tell at a glance if it's powered up

Sounds as if it would work. But remember, they can be defeated a well. All I need is your thumb!

^ I was thinking that as well. Kidnap and wack a thumb off and you're in. Also, the fingerprint lock would need to also be programmed to accept a wife's fingerprint if one has a wife so that she could use the weapons if she ever needed to. That also makes that if she were overpowered, her thumb could be used against her will to open it...lol that sounds funky "her thumb was used against her will" lol

Funky, yes! But it still is a valid point. The bottom line is, if I want your guns bad enough, I'll get them. Depending on the situation, any barrier/securty device will work only to a certain point.

Downside

It needs electrical power and is dependent upon technology that could be
disrupted/damaged in a natural disaster such as an earthquake.

I would not mind having it but would always want at least one gun I could put in hand by other means.

Ha...that's true...someone could get your thumb! We think it could be useful for other items as well, but not sure if the $100 would be worth it to lock up a bike... :-(

I would not want one. But it does sound like it could be a good idea for somethings.
