Taurus Fan is correct. The earliest wireless remotes used ultrasonic waves to change channels and switch the thing on and off. We had one Dad salvaged and fixed up when I was a little kid and I could just barely hear the "tiiiiiing" of the on-off switch. Reports of channels being changed by keys being jingled just so are/were fairly common with those ultrasonic remotes. The business of a cocking Ruger changing the channel is a new one on me, though. Check on The Straight Dope website for further details on ultrasonic channel changers if you want further information.

I think Elvis used to do this, until he shot his TV.
