Range brass Easter egg hunt..

Had some fun at the range yesterday. Went out with a couple friends to fire my M1 Carbines for the first time. Bout the time I was packing up the local PD and sheriffs department piled off a bus to have training drills for their SWAT teams. They were shooting on the 100 yd range and doing what they called 'walking' combat drills. 15 officers would walk maybe 15 yards empty a 30 round clip, reload and walk another 15 yards...same thing over and over 'til they got to the stationary targets.

Long story short after maybe 2 hours of shooting their AR-15's they loaded up the buses and went home. I just stood there looking at all the brass laying everywhere. Looked like a diamond field. I walked back into the office and ask the Range Master if he'd mind if I picked up some of the .223 brass. Said "okay, but we're closing in 45 minutes". Do you know how much brass 3 guys can pick up in 45 minutes...bout 4000 rounds, 90-95% Winchester. About ever 15 feet was a large golden pile, 15 wide.....Took the Carbines out of their tactical cases and used the cases like large trash bags. Also found maybe 100 un-spent rounds (no primer marks) and 1 clip.

Found out they do this about once a month. !!!!! Am thinking about getting their schedule.

Been thinking about starting to reload and now think I might have a starting point. Ha!!

I once worked with a guy that claimed to have been an armorer, but he may have been lying too, one of those types. He claimed that periodically, he had to "make sure everything still worked right", and he got to load up a truck with all kinds of goodies for a range trip to "test" everything.

Oh, and for picking up brass, I just bought a "pooper scooper" that has a steel scoop on one handle, and a small rake on another handle. Got it at PetSmart for $20. I put a couple strips of duct tape across the ends of the rake tines so brass wouldn't get through, and it makes a helluva brass scooper! On hard dirt anyway, don't know about grass/weeds, etc.
