| S&H Green Stamps Cant remember where I read it just remember it was on a gun forum, somebody was talking bout still having a book of these things. Some of the best memories I had as a Kid was looking thru that book seeing what my mom and dad might pick out. We never had much money and when they did pick out something,(usually for the house) it was still like christmas either way. Well I want some of these if you have some, I can buy them or maybe trade ya something for them. Thanks in Advance. |

| I remember Mom collecting them in the books, then occasionally going to the S&H store to redeem them. I got a model of the clippership Cutty Sark one year - the BIG one! Must of cost mucho stamps! Took awhile to build that thing too. She also collected the stamps on packs of cigarettes - don't recall what she redeemed them for.

| I'm the culprit who put that on a thread. I do have some but they are currently in a box on my trailer getting ready to transport to MO. I will be more than happy to share a few stamps with you when I can find them again...wait, they could still be in the garage. They's look good as a wall hanger in a small frame. I'll get back to you...what you got to trade? lol We are so in luck...They have not been packed. I have "10's and 50's Saver Book" (filled) and some 10-stamp stamps and 1-stamp stamps. The 10-stamp stamps are in singles, 4 and 5 stamp strips, 10 stamp blocks...the 1-stamp stamps are in 25 stamp blocks. All are mint. Quote:

| I worked as a auto mechanic back in 1967. We gave S&H green stamps to all customers. I think it was 5 "single" stamps for each gallon purchased. When I came home from work, the first thing mom would do before washing my clothes would be to go through the pockets, looking for my book of stamps. It was like a freaking treasure hunt for her, and the high-light of her day. She didn't mind doing my laundry!!!!! There was also the larger "stamp". I think it was equal to either five or ten smaller "single" stamps. |

| I brought up Green Stamps in a thread one time too. When I was a kid I would get a knife, compass, hatchet, canteen and flash light. Does anyone remember the huge pocket knife that had a spool, fork, cork puller, knife blade, saw, screw driver and God only knows what. They were made in China as I recall and even packed in cosmolene or something like it. If you didn't clean it up good it irretated your leg. They were 1 book of stamps...A.H |

| When I was very little, like 5 or 6, I remember my folks getting them from the cashiers at the Stop & Shop. There was this aqua-green plastic dispenser that sat over each cash register. The cashier would dial up whatever number of stamps you were entitled to - a big dial in the middle that went up to I think 1000, that dispensed hundreds, a middle ring that dispensed tens, and an outer ring that dispensed singles - and then turn a knob. And presto! the correct number of stamps came out in strips. It was almost as much fun as the automatic change dispenser that sent coins rolling down a track to smack into a little bowl and jingle. Mom would take them home and help me paste them into the savings books. Whenever we had enough of them to get whatever it was Mom and Dad wanted out of the Green Stamp catalog, we'd go into Boston to the Redemption Center and pick up whatever it was. I remember their buying a Sunbeam combination electric waffle iron/pancake maker with detachable plates, a Proctor Silex toaster and a Proctor Silex orange juicer with those. |

| Resident Armed Liberal ![]() | My mother collected and pasted religiously. And feeding eight kids and a husband meant she carried a lot of them home from the grocery store. I remember getting to paste them in the book for her sometimes; amazing what kids think is fun. Funny thing, though: I've drawn a complete blank, sitting here trying to remember what she ever got for them. I would imagine it was kitchen stuff of one sort or another, but I'll have to ask my dad and see if he remembers.

| My goodness how those things bring back memories, the market gave out S&H green stamps, our local Gulf station (anyone else remember those?) gave out the Blue Chips, and the local Pharmacy gave out Gold Bond. Lord my Mother and Grandmother saved everyone they got and we even had one of the Blue Chip redemption stores in town!!! What memories.

| Another trip down Memory Lane Back when Coca-Cola cost more than gasoline, the oil companies used to come up with things to try and instill customer loyalty. Some of those giveaways were pretty neat. We got all the Anchor Hocking glassware for two houses just by filling Mom's and Dad's cars up at the Sinclair station. We had little juice glasses, big milk glasses, dessert glasses, water tumblers, parfait glasses, pudding bowls and I've probably forgotten some. Dad was friendly with the owner and he'd let Dad know a couple of weeks in advnce of a change from one variety of glassware to another, so he could fill up more often. They'd offer you a glass even if all you took was a couple of gallons. (See Jean Shepherd's "Leonard Dopler and The Great Gravy Boat Riot" for a more detailed descripotion of how this sort of thing worked. A good read.) Sunoco gave away Cannon towels for awhile. You could build a whole set of towels for everyone in the house, plus extras for when things were in the wash, if you were patient and filled up there regularly. And there were coin sets for things like Famous Cars, the American Presidents, Famous Airplanes and such. I remember Sinclair, whose logo was a brontosaurus, did a giveaway between Memorial Day and Labor Day one summer where you got a plastic dinosaur with every fill-up. They were in hideous plastic colors like orange and yellow and blue, but we kids loved 'em and traded them like baseball cards, trying to get a complete series. We had lots of dinosaur wars in the sandbox with them. Today, you can't even get a free map from a gas station. The oil companies know they have us by the short & curlies and don't give a damn about customer loyalty. "We don't morally censure, we just want your money..." |

| The Mayor ![]() | I used to go bowling for S&H green stamps. A strike was worth 20. If you had a red, white, and blue combination head pens and the 2 and 3 pen, and you got a strike, you got like 2,500 stamps! My ex usually had a green tongue by the time we got home! LOL! Gosh that sure was fun.

| Runnin' With The Big Dogs ![]() | I recall as a (14) year old youngster, (while working at my Uncle's newly purchased Speedway 79 gas station), giving out S&H Green Stamps, Holden Red Stamps, and Gold Bell Gift Stamps. If I recall correctly, they were (20-25) stamps per sheet. Each sheet of stamps were seperated by a sheet of chiffon paper, in a 3" x 6" book. Quoting Bob Hope..... Thanks for the memories. Absolutely, at my Uncles station, we were required to wash the front and back windows, clean the side-view mirrors, check the oil and tires, on every car. Many only bought $1.00 in gas. Free air hoses, and free radiator cans of water were available to anyone who stopped in, buying something, or not. Last edited by Marine1; 04-01-2008 at 07:24 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| Oldjarhead, my Mom smoked Belaires and Dad smoked Winstons - both had the stamps on 'em. I don't see Belaires at the store anymore - wonder if they were discontinued? Glad I never picked up that habit! Tobacco is more expensive than gasoline! ![]() I remember glasses given away at the stations - Mom had a bunch - coffee cups too! I once was at an antiques booth, and they had a half-dozen of the same cheapo coffee cups! I was tempted to buy them for 'old time sake', but didn't. I used to frequent the Gulf stations - til they went under.
