| A Good Dog!
Hi all, Although I don't post alot I do visit very often and read almost everything ( atleast in The Powder Keg ). I've come to enjoy the interaction and also have come to to value the opinions and consider you all to be friends. Having said all that I must say that I come here with this post for comfort I guess. Today I witnessed one of the sadest things . As some know I am a cop in Ga . I am also on the canine unit for my dept. My sgts dog was put down today. He had been recently diagnosed with cancer. This cancer was very aggressive and spread fast. This past weekend he stopped eating and drinking. So the decision was made to end his suffering. We all ( the other members of the unit ) gathered at one our favorite training areas where the vet agreed to meet us. I have seen alot of gut wrenching sad things but today will remain with me for along time.I hate think of when that time comes for my Partner <<<. It has to be close to losing a child. We spend 24 hours a day with these remarkable animals. And alot of times our lives are literally in thier hands(paws, teeth , noses) They would not hesitate to give their lives for us. Well anyway thanks for the ears and if you think about it say a prayer for " BRUNO " , a Good Dog! And while I'm on the subject does anyone think there's a place in heaven for animals , I hope so.I would hate to think that i'll never see my partner again after her time on earth is done. I think Dogs deserve heaven even more than humans. Chris |

| There has to be I say dogs are the most innocent animals around. Those cats always up to something. Hate to see a dog have to be put down. Had to put our dog a few weeks ago. But it sounds like it was the right decision. Better to end his suffering then make him go down.

Chris, I'm sorry for the pain you and your fellow officers are feeling. It is my sincere belief that there is a place in heaven for dogs-right beside their humans' side. God Bless.

To offer comfort, please allow me to relay a similar (and shortened) story. My 5th birthday, I received a dog named Murphy. He grew with me and moved with my family when I was 12 and when I was 15, he developed a seriously malignant tumor on his front right paw that ended up getting baseball-sized and splitting the skin. The vet said we could remove the leg and that he'd live for maybe another year or two but would likely have the cancer return later somewhere else if it hadn't already started to spread. Plus, his quality of life would be greatly reduced due to now only having three legs after having four for 10 years. When my family decided to put him down, I went in to the living room where he was laying quietly (no whimpering at all the whole time during the cancer) on his favorite throw-rug that fit him perfectly. I sat with him, cried and told him goodbye. It was like losing a brother. Trust me, I feel your pain and don't dare let anyone tell you it's not okay to cry over the loss of your dog... they're family; sometimes more loyal than blood. The good Lord takes care of those souls that do good work on this Earth... e.g. I see you and your partner meeting up in one helluva reunion at the pearly gates. Be strong.

That's sad. Those dogs in my book are an officer, just happen to have 4 legs instead of 2. They are devoted to their fellow officers the same as any partner. It's truly sad it had to happen. But it's better he not have suffer any more. I'm sure he'll always be remembered and never forgotten. I take it that's him in your avatar? If not, got a picture you can post? Hell, either way got a bigger picture you could post? I love Shepards. Even if my wife won't let me get one. lol Not that she's mean or anything. Simply because we don't have the room for such a large dog. They need room to run. My heart felt condolences go out to you all. Ron

| Rainbow Bridge ![]() Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown... |

Wow sorry to hear your story Gac. I can definately relate as i lost 2 of my dogs within 3 days, first my favorite working dog of 17 years on new years day and second my best working dog of 11 years 3 days later, both of old age buy i had to put both of them down myself. Luckily i live on a farm and have buried them just up the road and can and have visited often. I know how it hurts, but i'm not going to forget even if it doesnt stop hurting.

There is an old Indian Legend that says that the Great Spirit created all living things on the earth, and they stood together as one. When he had finished, he told man that he was going to forever separate him from the animals and give him dominion over him, and to separate them, he created a great chasm between man and animal. And at the last moment as the chasm widened, dog leaped across and set at man's side. Anyone who has ever loved a dog shares your grief. My deepest condolences to you and your co workers.

Rondog, Rainbow Bridge was beautiful. I believe there is a place for dogs in heaven and I hope it works like Rainbow Bridge. I have a pup named Scruffy that I will be looking for.

I don't know for sure but there ARE scriptures that would suggest that they DO go to heaven. Christian scholars Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, Dr. Andrew Linzey, St. Francis of Assisi, Dr. Albert Schweitzer the Jack Van Impe Ministries, the late Pope John Paul 11 and many others, support the belief that animals have souls and a place in Heaven. I will be praying that God will comfort your Sgt. and your whole team and stregthen them in this time of sorrow.

My sympathies go out to you, your sgt, and the rest of the crew Gac. My beautiful yellow lab Chance was put down 4 years ago this past Christmas. She had me for 14 years. When we put her down, we had her cremated. She sits on the mantel waiting for me to pass. My family has instructions that she is placed in my casket with me so I have some one to play with. Now I'm crying.

Oh no! I'm so sorry... Give your sergeant our condolences. It never gets easier to lose them. Myself, I believe this life is all we get, but if your sergeant made his dog's life a good one and made it feel loved and fulfilled, then he did all that it could ever want and made of its life a Heaven on Earth. - Coeloptera |

That is sad gak906 and made tears come to my eyes. The Bible says the Lions will lay beside the Sheeps in Heaven so there will be animals in Heaven and I beleive we can see our pets again if we want to. I also heard a preacer say not long a go that we can see our pets again. I hope it so...A.H |

All dogs go to heaven, my friend. I feel your pain. I had to "put down" my female German Shepherd named, Heidi. She was the best dog I have ever owned. She loved our children and was very protective, yet sensible. She didn't attack folks unless they were raising their voice or threatening a family member. We were blessed with her for over 13 years.

Chris, your post caught me at a bad time. My wife had our 9.5 year old Golden Retreiver to the vet today. He figured he has lymphoma. Without treatment he can live another 1 to 2 months. He has been an intelligent and wonderful companion and my wife's best friend since we rescued him about 8 years ago. My heart is breaking knowing what he and my family will go through in the next few months. He is sleeping at my feet as I type. I wasn't brought up in a religious household, but I know what I believe. Chris, I just know when my time comes, I'll "wake up" in heaven and Samson will be standing over me. He'll have a ball in his mouth and his tail will be spinning while he makes that happy snorting noise. Then he and I can play some ball, wrestle and swim the way our old bodies won't let us now |
