So I received my C&R in the mail just this morning & I made 50 copies immediately. As I was going about my day, I decided to make a stop at two of the Big 5 stores in my area to see if they had anything interesting. The first store had only beat up M1 carbines, a few M91/30s and one M44 that was a ’45, non-matching and pretty dinged up - PASS. So I did a few more appointments with clients and then stopped off at the second store. I asked the guy if they had any M44s in stock. He said yes, that he had four in stock and told me that their sale started today for $89. Great! I asked him to have a look at the four to see if there was a ’43. He disappeared to the back storage room and reappeared 5 minutes later carrying a box. I asked him if it was a ’43, he said yes. My eyes got a little bigger at that point . The rifle came out of the box and to my absolute amazement, it was a beautiful ’43 Izzy, all stamped matching, not counter bored, bore was bright with strong rifling, muzzle in great shape, passed a headspace test with my field gauge, nice hardwood stock with minimal handling marks – JUST GORGEOUS. I was to blown away, to say the least! I had wanted to find a ’43 M44 as my first C&R purchase but I didn’t believe that I would be lucky enough to find one like this THE FIRST DAY!
Let me say now, in case your are wondering, that this is absolutely not an April fools fabrication!
Luckily, I have my C&R and my California COE, so the manager at Big 5 knew how to do the transaction right and I cash and carried the rifle on home for $89 + tax!
Good find. Both of my post war 44's came from finds a Cinco Grande. The '48 has the soviet hammer and sicle cartouche on the stock, and several other arsenal stamps (around 15 at last count). All matching stamped, and an almost new bore and crown.
I check Big5 regularly, every once in a while they have a gem, but had to look elsewhere for the M38, M39, and Tula M44.

Way to go. Congrats on getting your C&R and your first purchase with it. Looks to be in pretty good shape. Stock not bad at all either. Now you get to clean off the cosmo. lol Enjoy.

I'd have to guess Certificate of Entitlement? And that is a guess. lol

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
yeah GEO M44 i sure hope you get a good tula. the ones that i looked at were in really good cond.
Again, thanks for the tip and store check BB. I talked to Rob yesterday and he assured me that he picked the best of the bunch (there were 4 and the cracked stock made 5). I hinted at $100 for the cracked stock, but got no nibbles (I might still buy it).
I agree tbb. I only use the C&R for rifles I can't get locally. While I record all of my rifles in the boundbook (or similar page) I like to retain the ability to sell them without worrying about a possible problem during audit.
That C&R is a Federal Firearms License, permitting you to buy, and collect, but not sell for a profit (that requires an 01-FFL) and you are bound by the rules and laws of its issue.
When you sell a firearm purchased with your 03-FFL, make sure that you get all of the info from the person you sold it to and enter it in the boundbook. I require a copy of their drivers license as well.
Everyday M44's and 91/30's aquired locally are not purchased with my 03-FFL, as I may decide to sell them to get a better one.
Nuff said. And once again... good find. Once that cosmolene is in your system it will be the first of many.
Under California law, the only thing a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) does for Class 03 (C&R) FFL holders is that it lets you skip the waiting period for C&R purchased in state from a dealer, and for now allows the purchase of more than one handgun (modern and C&R) per 30 days. You must have both a Class 03 (C&R) FFL and COE to do this! Even with the COE you still have to do a DROS form and background check and pay the fee each time, usually $20 + dealer mark up. So, unless you absolutely can't wait the 10 days, or need to buy more than one pistol per 30 days, the COE is a $72, plus cost of fingerprinting and annual $17 renewal fee that is probably wasted. It is often difficult to convince dealers about what the COE does.
Kalifornistan's ridiculous laws are to blame for this!
Yeah, it's interesting that my Yugo SKS is not legal in CA due to the grenade launcher. All other versions are not covered under the assualt weapons catagory so they pass the muster. Big5 just refitted them with a flash supressor, so I guess that would be a possibility if I ever decide to move back.
How many 22mm rifle launched grenades are available on the street?
So... if you go to a Big5 store, can you buy the rifle without any kind of licenses? But you have wait a certain amount of days and background check before you can get the rifle?
