World War 11 Photos (President George H.W. Bush VT-51 Torpedo Squadron)

Photo-1: Carrier-1 USS San Jacinto- George H.W. Bush's Squadron VT-51. President Bush is in the 3rd row, second from the right, in the cockpit of his Avenger.

Photo-2: I believe during my research, I have located a possible unidentified WW-11 Photo of President George H.W. Bush, with the USS San Jacinto VT-51 Squadron Pilots? LT (jg) Bush Photo is presumed on the right, back to the camera.

That is fascinating that you bring this up ! My Grandfather served on the U.S.S. San Jacinto and told me that Bush was a pilot on the ship at that time. Also he showed to me a book of the crew etc. during his tour during the war, George Bush the name and the photo appear in the book he has. He also( my Grandfather) made note that the San Jacinto had the distinction of being under way for more consecutive days than any other ship and crew in U.S. Naval history ( 476 days or some such, my memory is fuzzy on the exact count ).

I wish I knew more of his service during the war. My other Grandfather served in the European theater and earned Silver and Bronze stars, so I am told. Once again, I wish I knew more of their service.

I have a few original photos of the Carrier USS San Jacinto. As I come across them, I will post them for you. Who knows, may find one of the entire crew? I also have Bush's Commanders official report, of how Bush was shot down, after dive-bombing and scoring a direct hit on a Japanese target during a bombing run, and another photo of Bush being picked up by a submarine in a small life-raft at sea.

I wish I knew more of his service during the war. My other Grandfather served in the European theater and earned Silver and Bronze stars, so I am told. Once again, I wish I knew more of their service.

Thanks for the great pics. I was just a kid during WWII but I remember the war clips shown in movie theaters. Brings back memories even though I was only 7 when the war ended.

As a family member, you may be able to request your Grandfathers' service record. I did that to get my Grandfathers' service record... so it wouldn't hurt to try. Try: How to Request Military Service Records or Prove Military Service (DD Form 214, DD-214, DD214

... hopefully this helps you.

Glad you are enjoying them, Windwalker. Anyone who has a request about a WW-11 photo, or certain battle incident, (Europe-Pacific Theatre of Operations), or ship, submarine their grand-parents served on, etc... please advise me and if I have the photo(s), or come across them from the thousands I have, I will be glad to post it. I have only gotten into about 1,000 photos so far from the vast majority I have. Hope I am posting them at present, on the right thread?

This is good stuff Marine. Far too much of history is forgotten and even deleted due to it's "unpopular" content in today's PC society.

If we don't learn from the past, we're doomed to make the same mistakes again.

Good job...

Thank you, Larry...Our historical history for the youngsters of today to learn about is very important, especially to show the many sacrifices their parents and grand-parents made, for the many freedoms we enjoy today. They surely will not learn about this in a public school. I wish to thank the G&G staff, and donating membership, for the bandwidth and privlidge of posting these photos. I will also, be donating to the site for the bandwidth used for these photos. I encourage all to help out with supporting G&G with their membership, (not for these photos), but to keep a great site afloat for us to come to and chat.

It is my understanding that students are not learning (or being taught for that matter) of the atrocities of WWII ... more specifically, the concentration camps.

Everything is becoming too "benign" ... so as not to offend anyone. Hey, history is history... it is in the past and we move forward however... we cannot forget or censor the past.

Interesting...I had 2 (adoptive) relatives that I am aware of in WWII. Grandfather in the Air Force and Uncle in the Navy. This could come in handy.

Thanks!

World War II Memorial

For you guys who want your relatives honored, I went to National WW II Memorial, Registry of Remembrances and had my dad listed. Cost $10.00. Tried to upload file, problem. Check out Jewitt Jones, Georgia.

Photo Positively Identified......

Update: Further investigation...... I just received a personal email from the Curator of the George H.W. Bush Memorial Library. She has verified, that the above unidentified photo, I suspected of being former President Bush, aboard the USS San Jacinto, (with his back to the camera) is indeed LT. (jg) George H.W. Bush, during a briefing of tactics before taking off on a scheduled bombing run. Just an advisement.

My father served on the USS San Jacinto from 1943 to 1945. If you have any photos or any memorabilia, I would certainly appreciate it if you could send some. His birthday is coming soon and I know he'd love to see it.

Yikes; wish I knew of this sooner, I came across some photos of the carrier and some of the pilots, previously...during my research. I will keep this in mind, while doing future research into the thousands of photos I have access to. I am sure I will come across a few more. Glad to assist you and your veteran Dad.
