Here are (2) photos of the Atomic Bombs used to end WW-11.
Photo #1: Code Name, (Little Boy - Manhattan Project -Operation Silverplate) was dropped on Hiroshima August 06, 1945, by B-29 Bomber named "Enola Gay", piloted by USAAF Colonel Paul Tibbets, 509th Composite Group Commander, of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, Island of Tinian.
Photo #2: Code Name (Fat Man - Manhattan Project -Operation Silverplate) was dropped on Nagasaki August 08, 1945, by B-29 bomber named "Bockscar", piloted by USAAF Major Charles W. Sweeney, of the 509th Composite Group, 393rd Bombardment Squadron, Island of Tinian.
MY Dad was stationed in Tinian/Saipan with the Army Air Force (bombardier). He told me about his experiences when they were making ready to bomb Japan with this "unknown" weapon. Said "he observed the hole being dug right off the runway and watched the progress over the next few days. Then found it strange they pulled an airplane (Enola Gay) over the hole and draped canvas all around the bombay. During the night he and another airman sneaked into the area to see what they were up to and took some pictures. Well, these pictures ended him and his buddy in the brig for 10 days and his camera destroyed. His biggest complaint was he never got his pictures or camera back."
My Dad had flown with the 393rd but had never flown with Colonel Tibbets. I still have some of his Stars and Strips news papers that he received while stationed there and a couple pictorial books on the Tinian and Saipan.
