Riding my bike about 90% of the time, I figure I can get by up to $5/gallon before things get tight!
BUT - everything is linked. As fuel prices rise, so do food, ammo and all other shipped goods. Rice and other grains, even beans, are skyrocketing in cost!
Milk and eggs are getting silly/stupid. Meat is getting high. Quality is dropping. Many food exporting nations are beginning to reduce shipments.

Tighten your belts - it'll never come back down . . .

Diesel for the big truck was $4.19 in Northern Ca. earlier today, and it doesn't look like it's coming down anytime soon.

I'm gonna start riding my bike to and from work everyday. That's about 12 miles. With the weight I'll lose riding that much everyday in the gulf coast heat I will eat less and therefore buy less food.

$3.39 in Vegas and I don't want to imagine the prices in Baker, CA !

I sold cars for about 2 years down in San Diego - Chevys and Hondas. This was back in 2001 - 2002 time frame when $1.50 per gallon was shocking. I'm really glad I sold myself my 2002 Cavalier and I'm also glad I got Mom to buy a diesel when she went to buy a big truck to pull the horse trailer and be her daily driver !

Mom might be paying $4+ per gallon for diesel, but she gets 16 to 18 MPG. The only other engine that would have worked for her pulling tasks was the 8.1 Liter (yes, that's a 496ci Big Block!!!) gas engine that gets around 6MPG !

Yeah, I'm a bit more than unhappy about the price of gas. I will, however, refuse to complain about the oil companies for a while and will bitch about the government instead. The government makes more in taxes from the oil companies than the oil companies make in profits. And the same politicians who know this fact still bash the oil companies every chance they get !!!

That's just it; there is nothing we can do. When the major oil companies reps testified before Congress the other day, they used the same tired line "WE need access to more off shore sites and public lands for exploration and production.". When asked about funding alternative energy research, the Exxon rep came right out and said it wasn't in his companies best interest to fund such research at this time.
Yet these companies get tax breaks after tax breaks and have had legislation passed that limits their liability in case of environmental damage.
When will it stop? When the oil companies and lending institutions succeed in bankrupting the majority of the middle class and the US truely becomes a nation of the haves and have nots with the best government money can buy.

Question

Been trying to figure why diesel costs so much, and came up with a political idea.
The voters use mostly reg. unleaded fuel and care only about how much it costs to fill thier tank, they don't think about how much this is costing truckers, who are but a small segment of the voters, nor how much the price on everything else is effected by the increased shipping cost.
Kinda like wearing blinders.
Does this make any sense to you?

I can't stand when people bash huge corporations for being greedy, as if all the money is going to one person. Conoco Phillips' profits are split among nearly 1 1/2 billion shares, that *newsflash* anyone can buy, like it or not middle class people's retirements are in conoco phillips, BP, Wal Mart, Target, Chevron, Exxon etc.people who bash these companies don't realize how many people would be absolutely screwed if any one of america's major publically traded companies went under

steps off soap box

Yeah, does really help much billy... I'd say gas, in certain parts of the US, will hit $6.00 a gallon this year, if not more. At $3.35, I'm guessing $4.00-$4.25 is very likely for me this summer.
