#4 buck is usually recommended when pass-through is a concern
just make sure to hit what your aiming at and it wont matter

To each his own, but in a life or death situation, I'm not even going to be concerned about the mess. I'd rather my family and myself are all alive, then we'll worry about the mess!

Also consider that its completely possible that a home invader could be wearing body armor or a bullet proof vest that will defeat a handgun bullet. But, a face full of buckshot and he's going down...

Just my opinion.

If you have a pump or auto shotgun . . .

. . . stack the first shot triple-ought buckshot followed by a slug
the keep up the progression. If a double barrel load one slug and
one buckshot. If a single shot use buckshot.

have a shotgun and a .22 with bird shot in it on hand so if they are not armed shoot them with the birdshot but if they are use the shotgun (that is of course if you can see them but you usualy can't)

I hope your neighbors are far enough away that you dont shoot one of them when those loads pass through the wall.

I agree. My tube is loaded with #4, with 00 and slugs in the side saddle. The tests I have read about show #4 penetrating 7 layers of 1/2 Sheetrock, and 00 12 layers. I have a brick house, so I feel relatively safe about a stray round hitting my neighbors.

My 870 has got #4 buck in it. I figure that is large enough shot he's going down and enough in there I'm a lot more likely to hit compared with double aught.

I nearly forgot about this, but the boys at Box o' Truth did some penetration testing of various shotgun loads. This is a great site:

Thanks for the Video backup ClayMan. I use my Mossberg 500 for home defense, the plug is out and the first round in is 00, the second round in is 00 and the third round is a slug along with the forth one in as a slug with a repeat in order of slugs to fill her up. That is for more than one attempting to enter my home. I don't know if thats the best order but it made sense to me.
