If it's paid for, and works (clear, no moisture, elevation & windage movements are repeatable, etc.), I would see now reason to change it. Also depends on what you're going to do with it... target, hunting, plinking.

An old military saying is "If it looks stupid, but works, it ain't stupid." may apply here.

thank you for your info the only reason i ask is my gun smith said he would not not put such a big scope on.but i am looking for the scope to match the 308 round.even if i dont hunt with it i like to match the rifle to the round.i target shoot and i have never owned a 308.could not pass up the price.

a 4 or 6 pwr fixed is ideal on these
especially with the smaller objectives
had one with a fixed 4 power and it was sell this or bolt 308.
man i made the wrong call on that one.

I own three model 100s and a model 88, and I agree a large sized scope is not the best thing for such a good looking and good handling rifle. i suggest (as runfiverun) a mid sized fixed power or a 2-7x33, or similar as a great scope for that rifle. A 2-7 with moderate objective size is all the scope you'll ever need and, as importantly to me...will also look great on that great classic Winchester!

My model 100s and model 88 have the same checkering pattern, It's actually the post '64 type, less expensive than the cut checkered point pattern on the pre '64 guns. Personally I find it nicer, and quite unique. Good luck with your new rifle! A Flying "W" on the pistol grip cap too?

I'd not say that a nice 3-9x40 scope wouldn't be nice, only that I prefer something a tad smaller on the model 100s or model 88. Both mentioned are GREAT scopes and both are mounted on other rifles I own. My 88 happens to wear a Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5x20 now.
