I was rewatching a semi-obscure John Wayne flick called Blood Alley, in which he plays a sea captain who is recruited by the elders of a village in Communist China to skipper a stolen riverboat down the coast from their village to the Crown Colony of Hong Kong and safety under the British flag. At one point a platoon of ChiCom infantry shows up. All the soldiers are armed with 91/30s, fixed bayonets and about six ammo pouches each. Appropriate for the period, although I do wonder where William Wellman managed to get his hands on enough of them to outfit a platoon. There are a couple of medium range shots and closeups that confirm they are 91/30s and not M44s.
John Wayne is also shown carrying a M1895 Nagant revolver, as is the one officer with the ChiCom infantry. Also appropriate for the place and time, and because it's William Wellman directing I'm not surprised by the accuracy. He was in the French Foreign Legion in World War I before transferring to the Air Service, and knew his guns very well.
Prop Department probably got a bunch of the US made rifles from the Army postwar, that didn't get sent to Russia. At the time, they would've been dirt cheap. I've read of the 'barrels of M1903's and Lugers' back in the Good Ol' Days.
