Persuasive Speech: CC

Ok,

I have to give a persuasive speech in my class here at school in 2 weeks. i have chosen concealed carry as my topic. I am going to try to "persuade" my class that concealed carry is a good thing and should be legal in more places. To start the speech my professor has the guidelines that we have to "establish our credibility" through an example. I myself don't have a personal example of the success of this. Obviously i can find some examples on the news if i look hard enough. The best example i have seen is the Omaha Mall Shooter that was stopped by 3 people with concealed carry. I am just wondering if there is a site where i can find more examples of the success of concealed carry???? I know i have a magazine at home (i forget which one i am subscribed to a few) that has a section about successful home defense cases in every issue. I will look at that this weekend. anyway, i am just wondering if any one here can give me a good site or personal experience, etc. I basically need about 4-5 examples.

I am not exactly sure what to use for the first example as said. I have been around guns my whole life (19 years) and i think i know quite a bit. But i cannot even own a handgun yet let alone carry, although i have shot several and know a bit about them. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a good topic! I would start off with the laws, legal age requirements, exemptions (felonies, domestic violence [and outline what domestic violence is], etc...) to purchase and own a gun, as well as the requirements for acquiring a CCW Permit.

By doing that, you will come off as a Pro-American, smart dude, instead of starting off with something about guns and immediately sparking feelings of fear and people thinking you are some gun-totin' whack job.

Look up the Church Shooting in Colorado Springs, CO. This was not too long ago, around the same time as the NE shooting. A 20-some year old man went in and started shooting at the parishoners. The volunteer security team (not officers, just private citizens with CCW permits who volunteers on the Church's security team during the mass each week) stopped the man.

There was also a case a few years back in Lakewood, CO of a man shooting someone in a Blockbuster parking lot because he was attacked. He was a CCW Permit holder. He was free to go and Law Enforcement found he acted within all of his rights.

I would also focus a portion on our constitution, federal, state and your local laws; don't just spout facts about incidents where someone got shot...

I would also talk about how a person needs to act when they have a gun on them, the considerations of others that need to be taken, how NOT to react to situations, etc...

Talk about the value of firearms safety courses.

Offer a group-outting, on a weekend or something....Make some "Interested" "Not Interested" flash cards with, if interested, "NAME:_________" and "HOME PHONE:_________" on them, and collect them separately and let them know you will (so no one will be intimidated to react a certain way) and that you will keep people's answers to yourself. Just make sure to tell them that their parents will need to attend. You don't need to put the responsibility of their actions on you or your own parents.

And, in the end...BE SURE TO LET US KNOW HOW IT TURNED OUT and how receptive the people were, including the teacher.

It is a little dry, but you can gather crime statistics here http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm by city. Correlate this with the years concealed permits were issued and gun bans went into effect. It might lead to something.

Done correctly, it can at least give you some FACTS that may hold peoples attention. Example:
From the 2005 crime rate data, your odds are:

1 in 27,000 of being murdered in Colorado
1 in 252 of being involved in a violent crime in Colorado

1 in 22,222 of being murdered in New York
1 in 224 of being involved in a violent crime in New York

1 in 37,037 of being murdered in Massachusetts
1 in 219 of being involved in a violent crime in Massachusetts

1 in 2,824 of being murdered in Washington DC
1 in 68 of being involved in a violent crime in Washington DC

1 in 17,857 of being murdered nationally
1 in 213 of being involved in a violent crime nationally

1 in 175,711,536 of winning the power ball
1 in 5,245,768 of winning the lottery

You have to pay to play the lottery.

Thanks guys, Ivan, I was planning on using the church incident and the omaha mall so far. i will have to find more. Also i need to look into laws a little more as i go to school in IN and am from OH. I am not even sure if IN has concealed carry.

One other thing i am going to stress i think is that even in the states where carrying is legal there are signs everywhere so basically it is still impossible to carry. That was the case in Omaha in the mall. i think that is a good example of why people SHOULD be able to carry in certain public places. I know in Ohio my uncles and bro in law have their cc permits but don't even carry because of inconvenience. I think that is a bunch of BS.

O yeah i like the stats BaserRonin thanks

I live in a pretty big metro area. I rarely find anyplace here in CO with signs against CCW holders. If I do, it is easy to find another store with the same service/product I was looking for.

Only place I see it is in government buildings. There is a website here: RMGO - Home that lists commercial establishments with a ban. I check it every once in a while, but usually they are yuppie puppy places that I wouldn't go to even if I could. Check the "Merchant Awareness" section on the left.

I am sure the NRA website will have numerous facts/statistics, incedences and cases that you cite. The FBI website will also have info you can use. A short while back I pulled up the violent crime stats ( year to year )from the FBI. It reflects a trend in this country that supports CCW as having a positive impact on violent crime reduction, when comparing the popular trend of CCW in the USA.

You may want to consider the use of incedences and stats from other countries such as Great Britain and Australia that have gone in the opposite direction since the banning/confiscation of firearms in those countries in recent years. ( I dont know if that trend continues still )

I would be interested to read your report/assignment when you finish it, and I think others would as well. If your up to it please post it when your done.

I bet we all can learn from it.

Make sure you point out that not every moron in the US gets a permit. Most are familiar with guns and all have to pass a training course and background check. Criminals will not go to the effort of getting a permit. And when you see a "No Guns" sign at different stores, criminals will not pay attention to that sign.

sell 33 maybe some one else can help you find the information about a small town in Ga. that has a law you must own a firearm to live there.
It could add a little color to your speech.

For more examples, Sell, get hold of a bunch of back issues of The American Rifleman and look through "The Armed Citizen" column. It is specifically about people who defend themself against the bad guys with firearms, and a lot of them are CCW permit holders. Read a year's worth of the column and I am sure you will come up with all the examples you need, and clearly written ones at that; because all the entries are culled from newspaper reports.

One piece of advice: select your stories/examples from as wide a geographical area as you can, to show it's not a Southern thing, or a Western thing, or a rural thing... you get the idea.

If I were on a computer now instead of my phone, I'd google this story for you. Anyway here in albuquerque very shortly after concealed carry (with a permit went into effect, a walmart employee's ex came into where she worked, jumped over the deli counter where she was and started stabbing her repeatedly. Lucky for her, an elderly gentleman was nearby who was among the first to get a concealed carry permit. He shot and killed the assailant and the woman survived.

Check this story out:

Police: Security guard with assault rifle kills 2 suspected robbers | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Latest News

Only thing wrong in this story...the rifle was semi-automatic. It was not an "Automatic Rifle"

Also, in the Church shooting in Colorado Springs, CO, the suspect used an SKS. An SKS is not an "assault rifle," it is a "semi-automatic rifle."

Check out Kennesaw, Tennessee which hasn't had a murder involving gun in more than 25 year. By law, there you MUST own a gun.

Try "more guns, less crime" from this fact sheet by NRA/ILA. Accident rate from CCW holders exceptionally low. Same as for criminal activity (it's like 0.2% revokation rate, most of which admin). Benefits of self-defense greatly outweigh costs. The accidents simply don't happen. And you're NOT more likely to be hurt with your own firearm. Best of luck !

Well, here's also a little quote for you. "Anyone can be assaulted with any rifle, but not all rifles are assault rifles."

Might be helpful, IDK but I figger it would be worth a shot.
