Just a quick question for you guys. I just got a remington 870 magnum. It belonged to my grandpa and my dad said i could have it, so i went to my grandma's house and picked it up. Any info you guys have on that model would be great. I looked around and couldn't find any info on it. thanks.
If your shotgun is a mat blue with a satin finish stock then it is an Express model. Technically, their economy model. Differences are strictly cosmetic. If it is high gloss then a Wingmaster. Either variation will be a reliable shotgun for generations with reasonable care.

read the chamber length
im guessing its a 12 guage
i think magnum means its going to have a 3 in. or a 3 1/2 in. chamber but you can still shoot 2 3/4 in. shells whatever size the chamber says is the longest shell you can use.
other than that it is a regular remington 870
also look for the model no. on the gun that should tell you if it is a 870 express wich is the cheaper model (still just as good the finish is not as good its the same gun inside) or it would say 870 wingmaster wich is the more expensive model (better finish)
I would shoot 2 3/4" shells until you find out exactly what model it is. If it's magnum, then you can shoot 3", if it's super magnum, then you can shoot 3.5"

Thanks Bravo, I was trying to find documentation to say just that. There is a chance it won't be able to handle 3.5's...

You need more info. The only M870 magnum I see is an M870 magnum duck gun mfg,d from 1964 to present.Changes were made in that time span such as rem-choke.You need to post barrel length, whether it has screwin chokes, plain or rib barrel, any and all writing, such as whether it says field wingmaster or express.Post a picture if you can. sam.
Thanks for all the info guys. I talked to my dad yesterday and he said that it was a regular 870. He said, like you guys did, that the magnum just means that you can shoot 3 inch shells also. It's a great looking gun, i would post pictures, but i don't have a digital camera right now. Thanks again for all the feedback, i can't wait to get out and shoot.
My friend duck hunts with his and loves it, it will take a beating too. his is a super magnum though, shoots 3 1/2s. you got a good gun though have fun with it
