I've shot Silver Bear in my 91/30 and M44 hunting. Made in Russia, works good.

Soft points are meant for hunting? I never knew that. That means that ammo that were meant for shooting ranges aren't for hunting? Guess i have to get both types of ammo.

Actually, Sellier and Beloit makes the ammo for Winchester. It's the same exact ammo, just marked\packaged differently and the price, ahem, "adjusted" for its' new status as American hunting ammo. I can usually find S&B @ Cabelas for around $15 while so-called "Winchester" sells for over $20 in most places.

Several commercial ammo suppliers offer soft point. I shoot it and use it for reloading. Winchester/Sellier&Bellot are pretty good, Igman has probably been bought by S&B as I haven't seen it recently. Wolf Gold is good brass, but most of what's available is FMJ (good for practice and reloading). Prvi Partizan is also FMJ, but a bargain for reloaders at $10.95 a box from AIM.

As per WW2junkies endorsement...Silver Bear is a heavy duty 203gr round that should take down an elephant. Not reloadable steel case, but only $7.95 a box +shipping from J&G.

You are right GEO. I use it for White Tail but if I happen to see an elephant, well, I'm ready. Or a bigfoot maybe?
Lots of fun to shoot in the M44.

If it's anything like Bulgarian HB, we are talking bruised shoulder. Silver Bear is one of the few rounds I haven't tried, so I'm ordering some now (and 5 boxes of Prvi Partizan brass as well).

Wolf Gold comes in FMJ and SP (don't think there's HP).

FWIW, the Wolf Gold is produced by Prvi Partizan just like Winchester is made by S&B.

Yeah, it just seems that the 150gr FMJ is all I see out there. I have never run accross HPBT from any of these guys. I do like to reload with 174gr Sierra HPBT Match but it's pretty expensive. Probably why HP is not a common factory load.

It seems like there is a lot of consolidation in the Euro and US munitions industry. I will see if the Prvi Partizan is spec'd the same as Wolf Gold when it gets here.

Nothing, because i don't have a Mosin yet, i am researching on which ammo to try out. I just need help on which Brands are best for hunting, and which is best for the shooting range. (Wolf, Brown Bear, Czech Ammo, Bulgarian, Hungarian)

No matter the brand or manufacture FMJ bullets are best for range work only. Pointed soft points are hunting bullets. There are several manufacturers of quality hunting ammo.

I would start out with Bulgarian heavy ball (because that is what I have) for the range. Hunting ammo just pick a brand that has a PSP bullet. Shoot that at the range to see where it hits and how it performs. Brown Bear is good ammo. So is S&B, Winchester etc.

Brand is not as important as choosing the right bullet for the task.

For the shooting range, milsurp works just fine. What you need to figure out is whether your Mosin shoots better with light ball or heavy ball. FWIW, I've heard that 91/30s prefer heavy ball and the M38s, M39s, M44s and M59s prefer light ball. But you tell me.

My 91/30s definitely prefer heavy ball. So does my M39. M44s? The ones of mine that I have shot throw patterns with heavy. Ran out of light ball so I can not tell one way or the other. Gotta order some more.

I have a box of Norma brass 182 gr, I shoot 182 gr FMJ milsurp just to sight in then a couple of the Norma to be certain, they're expensive about $38 for 20 but well worth it.

You can also pick up some cheap Brown Bear 203 gr, for about 10 bucks per 20 but, they have water seal and clog the chamber regularly.
