Just saw "Dawn of the Dead" on TV. It occurred to me that it was an excellent training film on dealing with zombies. It clearly demonstrated the futility of anything other than a head shot as well as the advantage of using a shotgun. The sniper sequence was interesting but showed how ineffective sniping is against the zombie menace because they lack any sort of organization and command structure. Also sniping zombies has NO shock value on other zombies.

Unfortunately it failed to show much in the way of zombie countermeasures other than firearms and high speed vehicles.

I had a big problem with the movie. It didn't take advantage of the combustibility of zombies. Several fire bombs would have easily diminished their numbers enough to transfer Andy, along with his guns, to the mall. As tightly packed as the zombies were the fires would have spread through the crowd quickly. Honestly, who wouldn't have sent Steve outside to negotiate with the zombies? Still, it was a fun movie. On a personal note, I hope if zombies ever decide to attack that they conform to the classic Romero shambling variety.

In regard to combustibility, It looked like it took a lot of accelerent to obtain any significant "zombie burn rate". They did however burn well once they got started. Andy sort of reminded me of an old prairie dog shooter I knew. They made a serious blunder in not rescuing him earlier when they could have if only to consolidate needed resources (guns & ammunition as well as another shooter). Their small unit tactics were dismal and while they were spending all that time building the buses, they should have run some drills to make them a more effective fighting unit.

ok guys
hear me out.
those folks had access to a sporting goods store.
get a bow.
tie some light fishing line to an arrow and tie the other end of that line to a rope.
try and shoot an arrow over to andy.
have andy pull the rope over to him.
tie both ends off really tightly
find some thing to use as a pulley and have him make a seat and pull himself over hand over hand.
but 1 st shuttle over every usefull firearm he can!
wadaya think?

they had days and days to get 1 arrow over there.
and that cop was burly .
he could pull a powerful bow back easily.

It looked to me as if the zombies moved around a lot. They should have made better use of the good OP they had. Check out Charleston Heston in "Omega Man". With such a good OP and vehicles inside an overhead garage door they could have staged a rescue/resupply when the hoards had moved away from the mall. Heston found out that you could slip out when they weren't looking and do what you needed to do if you kept a low profile.

They didn't have a good leader among them.

Billy, I had that idea too - from my old Navy days of unreps and line-handling between vessels. We used a similar line&seat device to bring our civvie college Perfessor over once. Only 'dipped' him a time or two.
Another tip from the movie - keep a couple good chainsaws handy! But careful where the blade goes!!

True. I thought they was going to try something to get things from the gun store owner.

That is EXACTLY what I had been thinking! I really wish they would have done that.

But I agree it is one of the better training movies!

Land of the Dead (with John Leguizamo) also got me interested in the use of a small crossbow.
