Free Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware Programs...

Just a suggestion...I have been using these two programs for several years, now. I know of several police departments, and many officers that also use them on their home computers. I have yet to have any severe virus threats. I have found the trick was, "before" you go on the internet, open both programs and download any new updates "first, on a daily basis". Scan you computer at least once a week, or less. Many programs, may take as long as 2-3 days, or more... to get around to automaticly updating your computer, with anti-virus and anti-spyware updates, upon release. I am sure each has their own opinion of what programs work best for them. If you wish, these programs are "free", and they work very well for me.

AVG is great. I also use AdAware for spyware protection.

Yea, I agree with you on SpyBot moose. I used it for a long time. But my new McAfee virus software has its' own and SpyBot and it conflicted so I had to get rid of it.

I really like this McAfee. I haven't had a problem one since I first got it over a year ago. Has many nice tools. I especially like the fact I can trace people if I have or can get a computer name or IP address. Not to mention I can see when people try and use or connect to my DSL...

I'll have to check out the links you left marine1. I've never heard of it.

AdAware is also a good program. Reason I use the AVG programs is..... both are the same manufacturer programs, and work well hand-in-hand. Example, you can run both the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware computer scans at the same time, (one does not clash with the other)... as well as.... both usually come out with the current updates at the same time. I have also found, many times...the AVG Anti-Spyware program caught spyware, the other programs (I used to have installed, also)....had missed, or did not have the current update.

Rich, Spybot Search & Destroy is also a great program. In the event, you are not aware.... Spybot works well with the AVG Anti-Spyware program. You can run your scan on one, afterward....a backup scan with the other. Some folks do not know, spyware attachments on their computers can slow their systems speed, down to a crawl, as well as not doing periodic disc cleanups.

You can download all these programs from majorgeeks.com. They have a ton of free stuff. I run a free anti-virus and two spyware programs. I have done this for years. It has worked very well for me. My high-dollar antivirus program slowed my system down to a crawl. An anti-rootkit isn't bad either.

Well, tried these out. They cleared out some stuff, but the programs had to be removed shortly after. Apparently my computer wasn't as into them as I was and pretty much refused to do anything at all. Took me two hours to log on to the internet this evening. Oh well. That's fine. I'll try again if I ever score a new computer.

If I read this correctly, are you saying the AVG programs froze up your system?

SuckLead; pondering on this further, did you "uninstall" your current anti-virus, anti-spyware programs, and save them to disc, "before" you downloaded AVG Anti-Virus and Avg Anti-Spyware programs? "Some"....but not all....... anti-virus and anti-spyware programs if "installed together", will clash with each other, causing a ripple-freeze effect. Norton is one of these programs.

Can't honestly say, Scotty. I do not have any experience with MSN programs. What I have is, Windows firewall, along with AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware programs. They seem to work very well together.

You have to watch having too many virus programs. It's best to pick one and use it. Example. I was hooked up with a great McAfee one and it has it's own firewall and spyware program. Therefore, I had to eliminate the spybot program because they caused conflict with each other and also had to turn off my windows firewall as it also caused conflict. The end result of keeping both was my system ran slower and locked on occasion. Since I was informed of this, and removed the spybot program, which I loved, and turned off windows firewall and let the McAfee programs run and do their jobs, my system runs much smoother.

However, if I ever get rid of it, I will bring back spybot and look into AVG. Like I say, I truly loved spybot. Being a free program, for me, made it that much more worth while. Plus, it worked and worked well.

And I agree with you Seabee in regards to Marine1's instructions on attaching pictures. I thought I had it right until the Hurricane pictures, as you know and it was he who also guided and assisted me. I also must thank him. JAC also offered assistance. As usual, the great folks here at G&G stepped up to help one another.

I agree with GlockMeister, only have (1) Vnti-Virus, and (2) Anti-Spyware programs installed, to prevent freeze up's and long-term hourglass loading. Be sure to do a Disc Defragmation and / or a "Disc Cleanup", depending on how much time and surfing - downloading items from the internet, and how much time you spend on the internet, on a daily basis Others, who may be sharing your computer, are also piling up internet cookies, bytes, etc, and loading up your disc with junk as they search and download. Recommendation:..... Simply click on "Disc Cleanup". It will tell you how much junk is on your system, and it will clean it up. This will speed up your internet surfing. For the record, as mentioned above... "AVG Anti-Spyware" program works very well with the "Spybot Search and Destroy Anti-Spyware" Program. I'm not a computer guru, but these are the things I went through, and learned from. It's your choice.

I did. I have one that use now. McAfee eventually did something similar, but worse. It updated one time and completely blocked the internet. So we had to uninstall it (which is a trick, btw, it still gives us warnings that it was uninstalled a few years after the fact because you can't get rid of it completely).

I think the issue is my computer itself. It's ten years old and really not feeling well. I'll try it again if I ever get a new one.
