The 12 o'clock position is actually called the Grenade Launcher Position but it can also be used when you want to fire the YUGO in singles shot mode with regular ammo instead of using blanks for launching practice grenades.

When the Selector button is set at 2 o'clock the semi-auto position a small hole in the gas valve aligns with a hole inside the gas block that aligns with a hole in the top of the barrel allowing gas to pass through and force the piston in the gas tube back which in turn strikes the opps rod underneath the rear sight, which in turn strikes the top of the bolt carrier and pushes the bolt back ejecting the fired round.

If the selector button is set to the 12 o'clock position the hole in the valve rotates over past the hole in the gas block and all the pressure is vented out the barrel. As far as having the magazine loaded with real ammo instead of blanks, that would depend on the circumstances at hand. Take into consideration that if you magazine is loaded with live ammo when you pull the bolt back to insert the rifle grenade you have to deal with the round being stripped off as you release the bolt,or you have to insert x number of blanks into the magazine on top of the live ammo fire your grenades rack the bolt back by hand until you get to the live ammo again.

The blank ammo offered today is mostly parade blanks,a true rifle grenade blank kicks like a 50 Cal black powder rifle with a heavy load. it's very easy to break your shoulder (which is the incorrect position to fire them from) or hand if not done correctly.

Your issue sounds to me like there's something wrong with your bolt carrier. Think about it. What is the only difference in manually operating it, and shooting it semi-auto? The bolt carrier is being pushed backwards in two different ways. All I can figure is that something is catching the bolt carrier and causing it to get stuck when the extension rod strikes the carrier. What I'm thinking would be similar to what happens when I go to slide the bolt and carrier back into the receiver after a field strip. If its not lined up just right it gets pinched in there and gets a tad bit stuck. Usually one good wack gets it unstuck, so perhaps that's happening but from the other direction? You could field strip it real quick and check the rails the bolt and carrier slide on and make sure they're straight and not dinged up significantly.

My YUGO wouldn't shoot in semi-auto either when I first got it. It would stove pipe ie shell sticking half way out of the receiver with the bolt closed on it,or it wouldn't eject at all and it was hard to pull the bolt back mainly because your cocking the rifle manually instead of it doing itself when it's working properly.

What I found the problem was even though everything looked to be in excellent condition after cleaning was the nipple on the gas valve was eroded just enough to allow enough gas to escape around it and cause the rifle not to function fully or at all as a semi-auto rifle. I like to also add I was shooting wolf ammo at the time, wolf is know to have occasionally underpowered ammo so that coupled with an excessive gas leak was causing all my problems. how do I know this because when I loaded it with Winchester white box FMJ it would fire ever single round all 20 with not one single fail to eject or misfire.

So I purchased a new gas valve form CNC Warrior :: OnLine Store installed it loaded the magazine with some of the wolf ammo to see if that corrected the problem,it did and now the rifle functions as it should even with the underpowered ammo because the gas leak has been corrected.

It could just be the the bolt and bolt carrier are being put in wrong...

From what you guys are saying, it sounds to me like the gun's a bit picky about that...

And I've been being somewhat sloppy when I'm puting that part back together...

I dunno. I'll tell you guys what happens when I get to shoot again this weekend!

Considering you can't get the bolt and bolt carrier in wrong(you just can't get it in there unless its in there right) I don't think that's your problem. The rails however may be dinged up and cause your carrier to catch only when its struck by the extractor pin. Unlikely in my opinion, but to me its logical that it could happen.

Its pssible but unlikely he got a bad one !I think he needs to check his position on the release for the gas tube and the grenade launcher selector and if it still does it then take it apart and clean the gas tube exstenion and the gas tube ports
