you might keep that in mind while deciding just what to pack when going hunting for hogs. Never underestimate your quarry.

Gun choice differs depending on what type of hunt it is and how big the game will be.
If I am going for a hog I wanna eat, that usually means it will be 125lb or less so I use a smaller caliber .223 head shooting them.
Extermination hunts I use a 308 and a 25-06 if it's in the open and a 45/70 in the brush or river banks.
I always wear my XD45 as well, or my Vaquero in 45LC.

The very few hogs I've killed were shot with a scoped 30-06 w/180gr. bullets during our deer seasons.
These critters don't have any neck, but I aimed where the head is attached to the body.
They go down in a heap shot there. I don't take head shot's and body shots want make for a clean kill...A.H

I kill them every day using a 17hmr, .223, 7mm-08, .308 .30-06, 22-250. all do the job, for a pistol I use .45 colt. (the .45 acp and 9mm aint meant for hogs) if I was tracking a wounded hog I wouldnt carry less than the .45 colt or .44 mag. usually I just let them lie and let the coyotes, buzzards and cats eat good. we are overrun with them in this part of Texas (occupied territory, under invasion by illegals) too many hogs, not enough time here in this part of Texas!!

.22 caliber for feral hogs? I don't know what kind of hogs you all have running around there. But here I wouldn't use nothing smaller than a 308 or a 30-06. I use 180gr. bonded in the 06, and 168gr BTHP in a 308. The hogs here have large and heavy grissel patches of armour covering there front shoulders. A 305lbs hog I killed last year I was using 165gr. slugs out of my 06 and at 200yds it never exited the off side shoulder the slug was splatted on the inside of the off shoulder. And the bullet took out the top half of the heart and he still ran about 100yds. Best shot and is a one shot kill is to the neck near the spinal column drops them dead and not much meat is lost.

here in south central Texas, mesquite,brush and cactus country we got some big a** hogs, lots of Russian boar cross, I just killed about a #350 boar with a .22-250 and he went down for good with a clean shoulder shot. I do use a .308 a lot, but when I am riding the pastures I use what I got in my pickup. I carry an AR-15 and an AR-10 a lot. my little .17 hmr has taken a lot with a shot thru the ear. I drove up one last week (at night) under a feeder and shot it at about 15 yards with my Ruger Bisley .45 colt. like I said we are overrun with them.

wow those bullets would almost be bigger than the hogs! we use 223 22-250 243 and have killed 20 or so hogs in the last couple years and we shot 2 with a 40 sw

racoons are called boar an sows too they arnt to hard to kill

Well Sell33, if you lived closer to Texas you could have a blast hunting them. last year my buddies on my lease trapped and sold over 600 head and didnt make a dent in their population. I drove up a few days ago and there were 30 or so in the bar ditch on our property. they aint shy and they clean our feeders out, I hope our deer get something to eat besides acorns this year. they are so bad farmers have a tough time trying to work their fields with tractors cause the ground is so rooted up, a lot of them will let you trap on their property or just come out and bow hunt or just kill them, it is a close race down here, what is breeding faster, wild hogs or illegal wetbacks!! wish there was open season on the latter too!!!

Very soon, if it hasn't happened yet, Hogs will be the most hunted animal in Texas.
You can call hogs with a screaming rabbit or a pig in distress call. They're fun to hunt with a handgun.

what ever you use make sure you take a pistol (.44 or a .45 or somethin) for back up...i have a friend whos been on the wrong end of an injured hog and it didnt look to pretty. just dont be like him and get some dumb tatoo over the scars on his calf lol, hopefully you wont have to worry about that tho, good luck
