When the moment of truth occurred, I was thinking only one thing: I'd better be right. Was I scared? Damn right I was. Did I feel that if I was wrong, I'd be out of the service and in Leavenworth? Damn skippy. Was I concerned about the guys' safety I was in charge of? You know it.

All I can say is ... thankfully he never leveled his rifle. I would probably have been justified had I fired, but I certainly would not have wanted that on my conscience.
