Stale, I've hated needles all my life, but give blood on a regular basis. It helps when people get hurt, and need blood, and it's the right thing to do. I gave every three months, when possible, while in uniform, figured if the time came when I might need to top off, I got some in the bank!

ya good point
it is a good thing to do, i felt very good about it (even a little smug)
Why does the Red Cross sell blood and blood products that are given freely by donors?
The American Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that supplies almost half of the nation's blood supply by working with more than 4 million donors and 3,000 hospitals. We rely on the generous gifts volunteer blood donors provide us. In order for the Red Cross to make that gift available to patients in need, we must collect, store, test and process the blood. There are significant costs associated with each of these processes, and in order for us to continue making one person's donation available to someone else who needs it, we must charge for the testing and processing of the blood to recoup these costs

stalebiscuit...I've given blood 88 times which equals to eleven gallons. I started donating as a dediction to a family member who had leukemia. Then to another who had open heart surgery. Then I just kept donating blood because it felt like the right thing to do since I was healthy and found it didn't hurt.
Only 2-3 times there was a slight burning sensation when the needle was inserted. But...overall, I donated blood expecting nothing to be gained from it personally. One side effect...each time after donating blood I actually felt invigorated energy wise for some reason.
One funny story while I was donating...I talked my co-worker into donating blood so we drove to the blood center together. We both finished donating about the same time and they led us into another room for cookies and a soft drink while we sat there with another person who just finished, too.
Suddenly the other fellow slumped forward and seemed to have feinted. The nurse in attendance rang a bell signaling for assistance.
As she was holding up this fellow and assisting him to a medical cot my buddy slumped over, too. WOW! WTF? Same thing happened again...another nurse rang a bell, assisted him to another cot...and I'm the only one still sittng up at the table eating those cookies and and drinking punch.
Now after what I saw I'm sitting there thinking, "What is going on here, am I gonna be next," and a whole lot more. LOL Never happened, though, in all of the 88 times I donated. Must have been luck or something.
and it sucked, kidding really but im glad i did it
i hate needles.....hate hate hate them
i was a wreck before and during the event, afterwards i was fine, im just real tired right now is all
how many other people here have given blood? if you havent you should, if i can at 140 pounds with a fear and loathing of needles, you can to
and its not like its some bleeding heart losershoe scam either like giving money to help the homeless er something
anyone agree?
My wife and I had both previously been donors, she as often as allowable. Unfortuneately we now are personna non gratta as we lived overseas a good bit throughout my military career. I don't think because of my time spent the last 5 yrs of my career in the middle east, that I'll ever be welcome as a donor again. Oh well.
Turner...that has happened to me, too. My wife and I traveled several times overseas since my retirement in 1998. I think you've nailed it squarely on the head when you wrote that the blood center now does not welcome blood from donors who have been to certain countries out of their concern for viruses which might be in a person's blood.
I am still willing to donate...but the blood center has stopped calling me to set up appointments.
I've given blood many times, usually out my nose, ears, and mouth.
Be a blood donor. Practice Martial Arts.
Hahaha...I take a Krav Maga class. Someone bleeds every few classes.
I give platelets every so, double units. My blood isn't really good for whole blood donation purposes, anyway. I'm AB+, universal recipient, so no one can use my red cells but other universal recipients...who don't need a specific type, anyway.
The only annoyance st it takes like 2 hours. Last time I watched the entirety of Windtalkers in the time it took to finish filtering the blood for platelets and plasma and putting the rest back in - good pic by the way. I didn't feel a thing when I was done. I never do though, even the times I donated whole blood last year.
Needles don't bug me...I always make phlebotomists happy when I can compliment their technique. But I do dislike the finger stick. Always have hated getting my fingertips cut. Last time they had to do 2 fingers because the first one stopped bleeding before they had a pipette full. I get...not nervous...but aggressive when they do it. It's hard to restrain myself when they're squeezing my fingertip trying to get blood out. Makes me want to hit them.
Still, you did a good thing. I really should make an appointment sometime in the next few week.s A double unit of platelets suspended in plasma doesn't effect you and can help 2 adults or 4 kids.
I used to give blood all the time. But I've found recently, down here anyway, they are turning me away for "too many tattoos." Which is BS because my blood was good up North, where I got most of those tattoos. As long as none of the tattoos were under a year old. So I haven't given blood in a few years and that does upset me. Both of my parents have had major surgery in the past three years and both got transfusions that saved their lives. I'd like to repay a debt.

I recieved platelets just before having my spleen removed years ago, and to that, I say THANK YOU, for everyone of you who have been involved with this wonderful program..God bless you all for this simple gift of life.. I'm an organ donor so hopefully I can give someone else a chance at life like a loving stranger gave to me...Thank you all one again
