I got a question on how to change the head spacing on these old rifles.
My mossin m44 is hard to fully lock into position with a round. Before anyone tells me to clean it thoroughly let me say that i have. Many many times. I am wondering if this is a relatively easy thing for a gunsmith to do or is it not worth even trying to do. and if it is worth doing whats a average price range for such work?

Marion, Is the headspace too tight ? OR is the bolt cam surface just a bit rough? Being that the mosin headspaces on the rim, if the bolt closes all the way on a cartridge, headspace is correct...

what happens is i CAN actually chamber a round and fire its just that the bolt stops half way into the locked position and i have to give it a slam so to speak to get it to lock in place all the way. I switched out the bolt with my buddies m44 bolt and it worked great so i assume it is my bolts head space that is the problem.

It may not be a headspace problem, It may be a slight clearance problem on the camming surface of the Bolt itself in one of 2 locations...First thing is to make sure your firing pin is adjusted to specification, It should be more than 75 and less than 95 on the gauge tool (Screwdriver)...

Sounds kind of like the extractor isn't going over the rim. This could be due to cosmoline gunking up the extractor or just a dirty extractor groove. I also suggest cleaning your bolt, especially the extractor, very well with mineral spirits and then giving it a light oiling.

he said he has already cleaned the bolt many times JAC but you know how that goes I found some cosmolene in my ex sniper evern after cleaning it sevral times .I would take it apart ad compare all the part s to a bolt that works.. another idea is to use his buddys bolt and give his to his buddy LOL
.. maybe not

Well, I could technically say the same thing. I've cleaned my mosin many times and cleaned the bolt many times.... but I've never intentionally cleaned under the extractor. There could be a nice layer of cosmolene under there just waiting for me. That's why I specified getting under and around the extractor; he may not have done that yet.

So thanks to everyone i found out that my problem was my extractor i ended up prying it out ever so slightly and now it works great.
I got another advice sort of question. I was thinking about getting a muzzle break for my m44 do you think that its a good idea? do they really help with recoil?

I don't think they are a good idea, they fly off sometimes when you shoot them and they really don't help with recoil. A good recoil pad is recommended, limbsaver is a good one.
If you do get a muzzle brake, don't get one that pins on. Get one that screws on, have the barrel tapped for it, screw it on and then silver-solder it into place so it stays put. They run about $60 on gunbroker.com when they are up for auction.
As soon as I get my hands on the brake, I'll be sending it down to Scotty to see if he can install it on a 91/30 so that, when I lace on a recoil pad, my bad shoulder won't get beaten up.
