Is the wood on an Enfield stock supposed to be soft that I can dig my fingernail into it pretty easily? This thing feels real light too. Is this normal?

I chewed all of mine off waiting to get to the range to shoot mine. My stock is pretty hard a well!

Mine isn't soft at all either, somethings up with yours...maybe it is some soft pine or something? not sure why i would be though.

Maybe its been Hit with too much oil?Only thing i can think of that would soak into the wood and turn it soft.

Is it a No1 or No4? My number one has very hard wood on it. The number 4 not all that hard.

Its a number 4. The wood seems to be very light as well. Maybe she is a counterfeit from afghanastan. She shoots beautifully though! My buddy likes this rifle better than my nagants.... shhhh.....! vaneska and franczeska will get jealous.....

Light coloured stocks could be Beech (UK) or Birch ( US/Can)
Any stamps on it?

I'll post pics tonight of the weird stampings. I am planning on refinishing this one anyways. Would polyurethane make the surface of the wood a little stronger?

It was originally finished with Boiled Linseed Oil.
For a sporter I like to use a thinned out varnish .

In the end I want it to look like this:



I am thinking polyurethane to strengthen the outside of the wood but it seems a little shiny for what I want. Could I get results like that with semigloss poly and some steel wool? I've used oils before on my mosin which has a much harder wood, It looks great but my first priority is to make sure this doesnt get dinged up more than it already is.
