BTW, they are expensive to rebuild. BUT you asked.

yeah but APCs don't fire 120mm depleted uranium rounds though

BA is a trickey thing when to look at body armor. It is tested and rated by penetration. Personal Body Armor maximizes your chance of survival. You would need a ballistic materiak Clay or Gel to test the vest. The one you had if just hanging on the frame , 38 +Ps will penetrate a IIIA vest put over ballistic material and it wont. Penetration over gel is different than over clay. I prefer ABA, Second Chance and Safariland, only because I am familiar with those companies. Try to get a vest with real Dupont Kevlar, although some of the other fabrics used are OK (personal preference) I have my Point Blank Level IIA vest which was issued just before I retired, I only use it on the range or I show it to the Kiddie Kops when they complain about their vest being too hot or too heavy. When you wear a vest wear a coolmax t-shirt or a carrier with coolmax this keeps the perspiration from the kevlar, which will shorten the life of your vest and help keep you cooler.

Sounds like I'd spend more than the vehicle cost on fuel :-D

And do y'all buy your own or is it issued to you (LEOs)?

Flak jacket is for FLAK...shrapnel & annoying tiny things. It's not meant for real bullets. Buy a class III BA and put it on under the Flak Jacket.

Come to think of it, why isn't the Army supplying that anyway??

Slow motion ballistic impact test .22cal @550ft/second

I know I'm slightly off body armor here but I thought these demos of a Slow motion ballistic impact test using .22cal @ 550 ft/second on the Wiley X Nerve goggles fit the bill. Scroll down a hair to find the video.

Polycarbonite eye protection has come a long ways towards minimizing injury. Stories from IRAQ can be found about road side bombs going off and soldiers walking away without eye damage.

Go to: The Box O' Truth - Ammo Penetration Testing and you'll see some penetration tests with body armor. Its pretty eye opening.

You also need to be careful (this may have already been mentioned) because in some municipalities and states, owning body armor is illegal for civilians.

Depends where you work, some very small departments or part time department officers may have to purchase their own due to budget constraints however usually if you work in most small, medium or large departments you are issued it 99.9% of the time.

It is my understanding that body armor is legal to wear or posses anywhere in the world, with the exception of Australia and Germany. It is only illegal to posses body-armor if you are a convicted felon in the US. There are also stiffer penalties for people committing crimes while wearing armor.

Do you have any resources stating where body-armor is illegal in certain locations? If I am mistaken, please correct me.

I have been told by a few firearm instructors that they wear theirs on a plane without any problems by the TSA or the airlines.

By the way, I love the Box o' truth.

There are plenty of places that sell it just google search, however some places will only sell it (per their own private policy) to law enforcement/govt. You can also google body armor laws and your state as well. Or ask your states police.
