| Senior Member | Specimens for the Museum Went to the world famous Graves mountain this weekend. Picked up two large specimens to be featured in our museum's display case when they reopen in January. The Blue one is Kyanite; aluminum silicate-sought after for it's heat resistant properties The multi colored one is Pyrophyllite; fibrous radiating crystals are very soft and easily damaged by fingernails raking across it. The yellow stains are from sulfur leaching out of the parent rock material combining with water to form sulfuric acid.

Pyrophyllite is used for clay brick however this pit did not mine it.

| Senior Member | Thanks, Spocahp. I guess they don't use much firebrick anymore, since they started making those sorry precast fireplaces! It's just not the same as a real fireplace!
