I see when you buy powder and or primers online, places charge a hazardous fee charge, like $20 at some places. So because of that, what do you all do, buy your powders and primers online or get them locally if at all possible?
Thanks in advance.

i buy all primers and powder locally, a haz mat fee for each, 40.00 you would have to order a hell of a lot to break even,
powder valley charges for primers and powder, one haz mat fee for each.
I buy locally a local sporting goods store caries almost everything we need. If something come up they don't carry they will even if worth there while and other people are asking about it will order it for us. The owner is a reloading nut and loves to work up some crazy loads and very odd calibers so he has pretty much anything we need, what a guy. Can't afford hazmat fees the way they are going up and then homeland security rules and regulations are getting crazy. Security at home is important but don't over complicate to the point nobody can understand it even the guys who write it
GM, the only way to break even with the Haz-Mat fees is to buy large quantities. If you belong to a gun club\shooting range, you may be able to get a few other guys to go in with you to buy a large order. Personally, I just buy powder and primers at my local shops .
The hasmat fee covers both powder and primers so it ts only $20.You have to do your math to figure the best deal. Some gunshops dont carry a good variety.Usually the price is better ordering on line. Most limit orders to 40lbs. sam.
I buy locally when I need a pound or two. I order from Powder Valley when I need a bunch. Hazmat fees are $20 for up to 48 pounds. Powder prices at PV are about $5-6 cheaper/ pound then my local guy. If I only order 5 pounds online that pays for thew hazmat right there. Plus PV has a much wider selection then my local dealer.
Glock No Illinois you shouldn't have to much trouble finding a good supply of goodies. Around here we have to travel min. 45 miles to the nearest place, and about 109mile to a large full supply house. Best place to look is in rural area sporting good/gun shops there seems to be the best luck.
I appreciate the vote of confidence rangersniper175, but where I'm at there's only one shooting range unless I drive a couple hours or go into Wisconsin. There's plenty of gun shops or FFL holders, but in any of the shops I've seen or been in, not many had this stuff.
I suppose if Bass Pro Shop does, it will be pricey as well? There is one of those near me, but I'm not a big fan of them either. To me, they're just about making money. The almighty dollar is the bottom line to them. That's my opinion anyhow.
I will definately look locally that's for sure. Now that I think about it, I'll check the gun range near me. I know they sell bullet for reloading, not a big choice but they have them. Never noticed powder or primers though.
And what about Gander Mountain, do they sell reloading stuff and if so is it worth it or pricey? Anyone know?

I try to get mine locally if at possible. I am lucky in that I live just a few miles from Midsouth Shooters Supply and can call in a order and pick it up a couple of hours later with no Haz-Mat or shipping fees.
I can buy most of my components at one of the local shops, however they don't carry a couple things I use like AA1680 powder or CCI #34 Mil-Spec primers. I get those at Powder Valley,I hate paying that $20 fee but sometimes you have no choice. When that tax rebate check get in the bank rest assured I'm placing a powder and primer order, that I want have to worry about those two things for a long while. One thing you have to consider with the price of gas is are you spending more going out of the way to get your supplies than the extra fees will cost you.
I try to buy mass quantities so it doesn't hurt. But if I am low on funds, I just truck on down to the local gun shop, where they will sell them in boxes of 100.
Glock I know our Bass Pro Shop in Nashville doesn't sell any kind of reloading equipment or supplies and somebody told me they don't even have any on there internet sit either as far as Gander Mnt. I have never checked there. Found a good supply 45 miles from the house and they carry everything I need or could want so no need to look any further. Sorry.
i buy primers and gunpowder localy, i pay about 4.50 per box of 100 primers, so at midway i could get about 1000 primers about the same with haz mat fee. i pay about 25$ a pound for gunpowder so i would have to order about 4 pounds to make up for haz mat. but i still try to support some of the locally owned businesses.
Our Gander Mtn does carry reloading supplies. Thats where I get most of my powder and primers. Prices are hgher than online (of course) but not that bad. Also, ours is hit or miss on what they actually have in stock, sometmes they have exactly what I want, sometimes they have nothing I need...

Powder Valley only charges one Haz-Mat Fee for combination powder and primers. I just ordered 11000 primers and 16 lbs of powder from them a couple days ago. The fee was $20 for the total order.
On a order this size you can save what the fee is on the sales tax you don't have to pay.

Locally! With the small quantities I buy, the additional hazmat fee makes purchases of primers of powder on line too expensive.
Getting a group of guys together for purchases is helpful. They usuall charge the hazmat fee by the container, no matter how much is in it. Powder and primers must be shipped in seperate boxes so no combining them.
