We have a herd that hangs out in the woodlots around here, that know perfectly well we can't shoot them in a residential negihborhood. They wander through the yards with impunity, eating what they like. They aren't especially scared of people.

A couple of years ago, I had a doe and a fawn walk into the yard while I was out doing yard work. I spent about ten minutes slowly stalking to within touching distance of the fawn while the doe watched. When I was close enough to touch the fawn, I clapped my hands together as loudly as I could. It scared the daylights out of the fawn and it took off, tail up in the air like a white flag. The doe looked at me and nodded once, as if to say, "Good for you!" and then ambled off after her fawn.

Well, let's try to anawer everything! Mitch, they love the salt licks that are out for my horses, even when they're gone! The rain leaches the salt into the soil, and they keep coming back. In that area, it's against CGO's rules to shoot, so I just enjoy the view. I love to watch them dig at the ground for the salt, They are so tenacious!

Cyrano, when the deer come up close, we stay in the house, and let them do what they may. We don't have a garden, because the ground is so rocky, so there's nothing for them to get into, except for CGO's flowers, and they don't come that close to the house.

Scoutman, that pretty much answered what you were questioning, so I think I covered it. I love to watch them, as much as anything. I love venison, and the only way to get it is to shoot deer. It's not a sport to me, I don't shoot for the act of killing an animal. I shoot to eat what I shoot!

With that said, does anybody have a recipe for a marinade for wild turkey? And this would be for barbequeing, as I would love to try it that way. I've had wild turkey out of the oven, and it's good, but I want to try it off the grill!! Any suggestions will be tried!!

Nope, but I'll give the next one a try, that way. T2K sent me a recipe that has my mouth watering. I'm gonna try that one, this time around. I walked out of the shop this evening, and startled my deer friends again. I gave 'em a little fawn maw, and they all stopped to see who was left behind. When I started laughing, they took off, lickety-split!

Thanks for the pics, Scotty. Enjoyed them immensely. They're healthy-looking little critters, too.

As far as the place being Heaven, I remember some rude encounters with ticks and chiggers in parts of Oklahoma; are they bad around your area in the summer?

We put a nice, big album on my profile page for everyone, and yes we love it here! I counted thirteen at the pond, this morning, but they're kinda skittish, because of the incoming storm. T2K, we got ticks and chiggers here, but I found a spray that keeps the little beggars off. The only thing is you have to remember to put it on, before you go out into the woods. And yes, they are healthy as can be, though they are a bit small, compared to deer in other areas. They say the state had a moratorium on hunting, and they started inbreeding. Now, we can take four a year, and I'm trying to leave the big ones, to strengthen the herd. I just hope other hunters are doing the same. Anyway, we put pics of Grand Lake, and Lake Eucha on the album, along with a few of a local watering hole in Grove. Hope ya'll enjoy 'em!
